WITCHITA - The Keiser University wrestling team opened competition Thursday at the NAIA National Championships in Wichita, Kansas, battling through a challenging first day of the three day tournament. Several Seahawks picked up key victories throughout the day, highlighted by Jordan Sommers reaching the championship quarterfinals and multiple wrestlers staying alive on the consolation side heading into day two.
At 285 pounds, Sommers continued his strong postseason run, earning an 11-1 major decision over Kaiden Cisneros (Arizona Christian) in the opening round before adding a 7-4 victory over Bryce Wheatley (Southeastern) to advance to the quarterfinals.
Sam Libby (184) also kept his tournament run alive with an impressive performance on the mat. The sixth seed recorded two falls on the day, pinning Griffin Ray (Central Methodist) in 2:18 during the opening round before adding another fall over Noah Hollendonner (Marian) in 2:06 during the consolation bracket.
Patrick Jones (125) bounced back after a tough first round match to win twice in the consolation bracket. Jones secured a fall over Owen Lindstrom (Bismarck State) before earning a 4-2 decision against Chase Walker (Cumberland) to stay alive in the tournament.
Josiah Fernandez (133) also fought back through the backside with two victories. Fernandez defeated Blake Woolsey (Providence) 11-7 and followed with a 5-1 decision over Zac Bosken (Reinhardt).
