The Sun Conference announced its winners of the 2018 Men's and Women's Track & Field Champions of Character awards along with the Academic All-Conference winners at the conference championship banquet held Friday night on the campus of Florida Memorial University.
Pedro Fonseca of Keiser University was named The Sun Conference Men's Track & Field Champions of Character Award winner. Betsy Douglas of USCB was named The Sun Conference Women's Track & Field Champions of Character Award winner.
Fonseca, a senior who will obtain a Bachelor's degree in Advertising and Marketing at Keiser University with a 3.53 GPA, averaged to be on the Dean's List for the duration of his educational career. He was elected Team captain for both the Track and Cross Country teams for the Seahawks. Involved in the student body as a stand-out residence assistant, Fonseca has worked for Residence Life since his freshman year.
A soldier for the United States of America, Fonseca enlisted in 2013 and has served our nation for five years. A Noncommissioned Officer and an Army Achievement Medal recipient, he was deployed in 2016 for a year to Djibouti, Africa to serve our country.
Fonseca spends much of his time volunteering for our community beyond his athletics, residence life, and military responsibilities. He volunteers for Habitat of Humanity building homes in Puerto Rico and Florida and dedicates his free time to Habitat for Humanity by painting houses, building foundation work, assisting with appliance set-ups, and organized hurricane relief items to Puerto Rico. Mendoza donates and helps organize donations for Toys for Tots and Make A Wish Foundation while also gathering donations on campus for the Salvation Army. Fonseca volunteers at local nursing homes during the holiday seasons by visiting the elderly and delivering flowers, cards, and socks. He is also actively involved in his hometown church.
