Avril Amil Ruiz scored twice, including the eventual game-winner in the 35th minute, as No. 2 Keiser knocked off top-ranked Cumberlands (KY), 2-0, on Saturday in a battle of unbeaten NAIA powers.
The Seahawks improved to 5-0-1 on the season and posted their fourth shutout of the year, while the Patriots (3-1-2) suffered their first loss of the season.
Amil Ruiz opened the scoring in the 35th minute, finishing off a feed from Luisa Fontes to make it 1-0. She struck again in the 64th minute, this time converting a pass from Haley Miller to double the lead and put the game out of reach.
Keiser controlled play throughout, out-shooting Cumberlands 15-6 and edging the corner-kick count, 3-2. Goalkeeper Mio Tanaka was rarely tested but made all three saves she faced to preserve the clean sheet, her fourth shutout of the season. Patriots keeper Morgan White kept her side within striking distance with five saves on seven shots on goal.
Discipline was an issue for the road side, as Cumberlands was whistled for 13 fouls compared to just five for Keiser. Both teams picked up a yellow card, with Ruby Vernon cautioned for Keiser in the 18th minute and Laura Bosca cautioned for thre Patriots two minutes later.
