No. 1 Keiser women's soccer used a second-half penalty kick to salvage a share of the points against a familiar rival. Haley Miller's spot kick canceled out an early second-half strike from William Carey's Maddie Davis, and Keiser and the No. 8 Crusaders played to a 1-1 draw at Arrigo-Vecellio Field.
Luisa Fontes swung in a corner just under two minutes in, and Ida Åkerlind rose for a header that sailed wide. Th ball hit the back of the net in the sixth minute off the foot of Avril Amil Ruiz but the flag was up for offside and the goal was wiped from the board. The Seahawks kept pressing behind a second Fontes corner in the ninth minute, but Åkerlind's follow-up header was blocked. William Carey found its footing as the half wore on, with Luana Falconeri testing Mio Tanaka in the 17th minute and Kayla Martin doing the same just past the half-hour mark, but Tanaka was equal to both. Keiser shuffled its attacking pieces late in the half, bringing on Emilia Nilsson, Vera Croné, and eventually Victoria Clark, but the two sides went to the break locked in a scoreless draw.
Keiser came out of the break with renewed energy, forcing a blocked chance from the top of the box by Delia Letelier inside the first minute and a missed effort from Blanca Bächi in the 54th, but it was William Carey that struck first. Following a free kick, Maddie Davis picked up a loose ball in the box beat Tanaka in the 57th minute for her first goal of the season that put the Crusaders in front. Keiser answered immediately with pressure of its own, drawing a corner and getting a shot off through Åkerlind moments later, but the deficit held into the mid-60s as William Carey settled in with a pair of corners of its own. The turning point came in the 68th minute, when Keiser was awarded a penalty kick and Haley Miller stepped up and buried it for her first goal of the season, pulling the Seahawks level at 1-1. Neither team could find a winner down the stretch despite late looks from Nilsson, Bächi and Ella Bergström.
Keiser returns on Saturday to play Carroll College at home. Kickoff from Arrigo-Vecellio is set for 1:30 p.m.
