NORTH PORT, Fla. – No. 22 Baseball split a doubleheader with New College of Florida on Friday at CoolToday Park, winning the opener 9-2 before dropping game two 4-3 in seven innings. With the split, the Seahawks stand at 23-8 on the season.

The first game belonged to Carson Hawkes almost from the moment it began. New College jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a pair of unearned runs — a Seahawks error kept the inning alive, and Patrick Fink and Rylan Jomisko both came through with RBI hits — but Hawkes locked it down from there, not allowing another run the rest of the day. He finished with seven sharp innings, giving up just those two unearned runs on five hits, striking out four and picking off three baserunners, to improve to 7-1 on the season.

The offense did the rest. Keiser erased the deficit in the third with one of the stranger rallies of the season — three runs, just one hit, and a parade of walks and hit batsmen. Ty Martinez and Tad Brooks both took pitches off them with the bases loaded to force in runs, and Jaden Ross drew an RBI walk to give Keiser the lead for good at 3-2. The Seahawks kept adding from there: a Jeremy Garcia RBI triple in the fourth, a Jaden Ross RBI double in the fifth, and a passed ball that scored Ross pushed it to 6-2. The highlight of the late innings came in the seventh, when Juan Lopez — pinch running for Alex Getz — alertly stole home while Avery Doezie was caught stealing second, a heads-up play that made it 7-2. Two more runs in the ninth closed out the victory. Maddox Shaver was the unsung star of the offense, reaching base five times and scoring three runs without ever doing much damage himself.

Game two was a different story — Jeremy Garcia set the tone immediately with a leadoff home run to right in the first, and Jake Olsen came through with a two-out RBI single in the second to make it 2-0. Austin Taylor was crisp through four innings, not walking a batter, and Keiser looked in control. Things took a turn in the fifth when New College tied it at 2-2 on a pair of unearned runs — Andrew Merchant scored when a fly ball was misplayed in right field, and Domenic Fernandez then singled home Robert Hoffman. Keiser answered in the bottom half when Tad Brooks, who turned a center field error into extra bases and advanced to third on a wild pitch, came home on a Ty Martinez RBI single to make it 3-2. But the lead lasted less than a half-inning. In the top of the sixth, New College's Luka Dodig and Andrew Merchant pulled off a double steal and Wil Gregory lined a two-run single to right to put the Mighty Banyans ahead 4-3. Keiser made it interesting in the seventh, putting Ty Martinez and Jaden Ross on base to bring the tying run to third with two outs, but the game ended on a strikeout. Taylor pitched well in a losing effort, allowing no earned runs on eight hits over 4.2 innings. Brooks had three hits to pace the Keiser offense in the nightcap, while Garcia's leadoff homer was the tone-setter the Seahawks couldn't quite build on.
