WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – No. 24 Keiser baseball improved to 11-4 on the season Friday afternoon, rallying from an early two-run deficit to defeat Midland behind a dominant bullpen performance from Carson Hawkes, who moved to a perfect 5-0 on the year leading the Keiser pitching staff and the nation in wins.
Midland struck first in the opening inning with a two-run homerun off the bat of Jimmy Martinez Jr. Keiser responded in the bottom of the first, as Ty Martinez reached on a hit by pitch, moved to second on a Avery Doezie groundout, and came home on a Tad Brooks single up the middle to make it 2-1 after one.
Both teams traded zeros through the middle innings as the pitching took over, with Carson Hawkes entering in the sixth with one out and runners on first and second, promptly getting Adam Muniz Jr to ground into an inning-ending double play. Keiser then manufactured a tying run in the seventh through patience and good fortune. Maddox Shaver reached on a hit by pitch and was bunted to second by Andres Balart for the first out. Jeremy Garcia then drew a two-out walk to keep the inning alive. With Ben Brantley now in relief of Owen Kelley. Martinez was hit by pitch to load the bases, and Jake Olsen reached on an error to force the issue. While Garcia was thrown out at home on the play, Shaver came around to score the tying run to make it 2-2.
Keiser took the lead for good in the eighth when Avery Doezie drew a leadoff walk off Brantley, and after Mason came on in relief, Brooks delivered the go-ahead hit with a double to left center, scoring Doezie to make it 3-2. Cameron Hancock singled to move Brooks to third, pinch runner James Hinespeter came in for Hancock but was caught stealing. Shaver then reached on a hit by pitch to put runners at the corners. Balart then came through with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Brooks and pushing the lead to 4-2, which would prove to be the final score.
Hawkes was exceptional the rest of the way, striking out five and allowing just two hits over 3.2 scoreless frames to earn the win and move to 5-0 on the season, the best record among the Keiser pitching staff. Brooks was the offensive catalyst, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while Keiser's ability to draw walks, string together timely hits, and capitalize on Midland's defensive miscues .
