The Keiser flag football team heads to Riverside, Missouri, for this year's NAIA Women's Flag Football Finals May 5-8. The 14-team tournament will take place at the Kansas City Current Training Facility with pool play kicking off things on Monday.
The Seahawks will face Cottey College on Monday, May 5 (1:00 PM ET) followed by a contest with Baker (Kan.) on Tuesday, May 6 (11:00 AM ET).
Keiser comes into this year's tournament as the top seed in Pool B after claiming the team's second straight Sun Conference Tournament Championship with a 33-15 win over Thomas (Ga.).
It was back-to-back scores by sophomore
Ashlea Klam that turned the championship game into a rout as the Second-Team All-Sun Conference honoree found the endzone twice in the final five minutes of the second quarter.
The native of Austin, Texas, gave Keiser a 20-7 lead with a 14-yard touchdown catch with 4:45 left in the half. Klam followed that score with the momentum shift of the game, returning a Kaitlyn Herb pass 75 yards and the score - her 13th interception of the season. On first-and-goal from the KU three-yard line, Klam shadowed Herb, who was looking for an underneath pass but Klam positioned herself perfectly, taking the pick "to the house". She also added her 14th interception on the ensuing drive to end the half. She is the nation's leader in interceptions.
Quarterback
Haylie Young added four touchdown passes in the game, completing scores to
Janasia Wilson (six yards),
Kennedy Foster (17 yards), Klam (14 yards), and
Chloe Griffin (seven yards).
The win marked the first for Keiser over Thomas (Ga.) in Thomasville (1-4 all-time). A rematch of last year's Sun Conference Championship Game, it was also the Seahawks fourth win in their last five meetings with the Night Hawks. The win improves Keiser to 6-2 all-time in the Sun Conference Tournament and 3-1 in the league's championship game.
