Keiser flag football scored 34-unanswered points to come away with a 34-7 win over St. Thomas on Saturday afternoon. Forcing five interceptions, the Seahawks kept the Bobcats off the scoreboard for over three quarters to improve 32-5 all-time in Sun Conference action.
Quarterback
Haylie Young completed 23-of-28 passes for 262 yards and four passing touchdowns. Five different Seahawks found the endzone on Saturday (
Janasia Wilson,
Kennedy Foster,
Chloe Griffin,
Brenna Ramirez, and
Hanna Lencioni-Gonzalez).
Sophia Caprio led all Keiser receivers with 10 catches for 79 yards.
Defensively, Keiser was led by linebacker
Sa'mya Bryant, who posted a team-high seven flag pulls with one sack and two interceptions. With seven flag pulls in the game, Bryant became the first player in program history to record 250 career flag pulls. Also recording picks were Foster,
Sarah Villarreal, and
Ashlea Klam.
With the win, Keiser improved to 12-2 all-time versus the Bobcats (3-1 at the KU Multi-Purpose Field).
Keiser 7, St. Thomas 7
- The Bobcats scored the first points of the game following a 45-yard touchdown pass from Brooke Bogatz to Lia Cruz with 8:43 left in the first
- With the made extra-point attempt, STU led, 7-0
- Keiser quickly responded going 66 yards on three play, tying the game on a 39-yard touchdown pass from Haylie Young to Chloe Griffin
- On the drive, Young went 2-of-3 for 66 yards and the score
- A successful Young to Ashlea Klam pass on the extra-point attempt tied the game at 7-7 (7:13)
- The Bobcats took their next possession down to the Keiser 33-yard line before Kennedy Foster picked off Bogatz
- The turnover gave Keiser the ball at their own 14-yard line with 2:04 left in the first
- The interception was Foster's team-leading fourth of the season
Keiser 20, St. Thomas 7
- Keiser opened the second with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Young to Brenna Ramirez
- For Ramirez, it was her second TD catch in as many games
- After holding the the Bobcats on fourth-and-one, Keiser got the ball at the STU 39-yard line (8:24)
- Three plays later, it was the Bobcat defense that came up with the stop, picking off Young
- STU's Nandi Ramessar made the interception at her team's own seven-yard line
- The Bobcats drove down to the KU 33-yard line but on third-and-13 Sa'mya Bryant was credited with the sack of Bogatz, forcing STU to punt
- Keiser added to their lead, taking the ball 67 yards on eight plays
- With 11 seconds left in the half, Young found Foster for the four-yard score, extending Keiser's lead to 20-7
Keiser 20, St. Thomas 7
- Keiser took its opening drive of the half 64 yard down to the STU six-yard line
- On fourth-and-goal from the six, KU was stopped short as Janasia Wilson's flag was pulled at the two-yard line, turning the ball over on downs
- On the ensuing play, Klam picked off Bogatz at the STU 10-yard line as Keiser took over deep in Bobcats territory (6:25)
- The Seahawks looked to push their lead but Ramessar had other plans, picking off her second pass of the game at the STU five-yard line (4:17)
- The Bobcats closed out the quarter with the ball at the keiser 31-yard
Keiser 34, St. Thomas 7
- STU began the quarter with a fourth-and-five from the KU 25-yard line
- On the first play of the quarter, Foster made an acrobatic play to stop STU's Cydnee Brooks one yard short of the first (11:40)
- Bryant registered her first of two interceptions on the day, picking off a pass by Bogatz with 7:05 left in the game
- The interception gave Keiser the ball at the STU 35-yard line
- The turnover set up KU's fifth touchdown as Young recorded a 10-yard touchdown pass to Wilson with 2:24 left to play
- The made extra point gave Keiser a 27-7 lead
- For the second straight drive, Bryant picked off Bogatz; this time giving the Seahawks the ball at the STU 29 yard line (1:47)
- On play later, Wilson connected for Hanna Lencioni-Gonzalez for the first touchdown pass and catch of both freshmen's careers
- STU attempted to drive down the field for one last push but Sarah Villarreal recorded the team's fifth interception with 15 seconds left in the game
Keiser will host the Siena Heights Saints on Thursday, March 6. Game time is set for 4:00 PM.
