LAKE WALES, Fla. – Keiser women's basketball built an early lead and never looked back, defeating Warner 68-59 on Friday afternoon.
The Seahawks jumped out to a commanding 21-8 first-quarter advantage and maintained control throughout, never trailing in the contest. Keiser's hot start featured 57.1% shooting from the field and four three-pointers in the opening period, setting the tone for the afternoon. Avrie Schmidt opened the scoring with a jumper at 9:45, and the Seahawks never trailed from there. Caidyn Cannon drew a foul and converted a free throw to push the lead to 3-0, then Carolina de Domingo knocked down a three-pointer to extend the advantage to 8-0 before Warner got on the board.
Keiser's aggressive defense created havoc early, with Cannon recording two steals in the opening minutes while Keiser forced multiple Warner turnovers. Jasmyn Hale connected on back-to-back three-pointers midway through the first quarter, helping push the lead to 14-4. Emelia O'Gilvie added another triple, and Hale closed the quarter with a deep three-pointer at the buzzer to give Keiser a 21-8 cushion after ten minutes.
Senior Avrie Schmidt paced Keiser with 15 points on efficient 7-of-13 shooting, adding two assists. Caidyn Cannon provided a strong interior presence with 14 points and a team-high four rebounds, though she struggled from the free-throw line, converting just 6-of-11 attempts. Jasmyn Hale added 12 points including a pair of three-pointers, while Carolina de Domingo contributed 11 points, four rebounds, and a game-high five blocks in the winning effort. Satori Griffin added eight points and eight rebounds while recording three steals.
Warner struggled to find their rhythm in the second quarter, managing just two field goals while going to the free-throw line 18 times. The Royals converted 13 of those attempts to keep the game within reach, cutting the deficit to 33-25 at halftime. Bethany Howard kept Warner in the game early, drawing fouls and getting to the line consistently.
The third quarter saw both teams trade baskets, with Schmidt scoring on consecutive possessions to push the lead back to double digits. Warner's Aleyna Sherman began to heat up, knocking down a jumper and then adding a three-point play to pull the Royals within eight at 44-36. Griffin answered with a steal and layup for Keiser, and the Seahawks maintained their cushion throughout the period, taking a 50-40 lead into the final quarter.
Warner made one final push in the fourth quarter behind Sherman and Howard, who each finished with 19 points. Sherman caught fire in the second half, scoring 17 of her points after halftime and draining two crucial three-pointers down the stretch. With under a minute remaining, Sherman hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to 65-54, then added another after a Keiser turnover to make it 66-56 with 16 seconds left. Howard added eight rebounds and two blocks in the loss, while Carissa Marthy grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for the Royals.
Keiser's defensive pressure proved decisive, forcing 18 Warner turnovers while committing 19 themselves. The Seahawks converted those miscues into 22 points compared to just 10 for the Royals. Keiser also dominated second-chance opportunities with 11 offensive rebounds. De Domingo's five blocked shots anchored the interior defense, swatting away multiple Warner layup attempts in crucial moments. Warner outscored Keiser from the free-throw line 22-12, but the Royals' 37.0% field goal percentage and 22.2% first-quarter shooting proved too difficult to overcome.
