No. 21 Keiser men's basketball started the new year in the win column, taking down the New College of Florida Mighty Banyans at home, 74-62. It was a scrappy game the whole way through, but that didn't stop
Tyreon Payne who scored a season-high 29 points, including 26 in the second half on 10-of-10 shooting.
Vincent Miszkiewicz had a monstrous day on the boards, bringing down a career-high 23 rebounds while tying his own program record for defensive rebounds in a game with 19. With 16 points, he tied Patrick Horstmann with 38 double-doubles at Keiser. The Seahawks also added a new member to the team in
Malik Kabia who made his presence felt with a late slam.
Keiser returns to the road on Wednesday with a game against Southeastern in Lakeland, Fla. Tipoff from The Furnace is set for 7:30 p.m.
After the Mighty Banyans cut the lead to six with 1:16 left,
Calvin Sirmans went to the line and hit two free throws before grabbing a defensive rebound on the other end and throwing it up to Malik Cabia for the fast-break alley-oop slam.
Keiser 33, NCF 26
- Loghan Downie and Vincent Miszkiewicz opened the game with back-to-back threes in the first two minutes of the game to give Keiser the early lead
- After a pair of baskets by NCF, Downie capped a 6-0 run with another three to make it 12-4
- Charlie Yoder started to get hot for the Mighty Banyans, scoring eight points on a 15-2 run and giving New College a 19-14 lead with 10 minutes to play in the first
- The Seahawks responded by attacking the basket and getting to the line before a Miszkiewicz three put KU back in front, 24-22, with 7:06 on the clock
- Keiser would hold on to that lead for the remainder of the half as Miszkiewicz closed out the period by pinning a Jordan Clark layup attempt to the backboard and taking the Seahawks to the locker room with a seven-point advantage
Keiser 74, NCF 62
- New College got off to a quick start in the second half, but Tyreon Payne was there to score all eight points for the Seahawks in the first five minutes
- The Mighty Banyans cut the lead to one before a dunk from Miszkiewicz and a three from Kabia pushed the lead back up to 48-42 with 11:49 on the clock
- Every time that New College caught up, Keiser turned to Payne who could not miss in the second half as his 20th point put the Seahawks up 58-50
- On the other side of the floor, Yoder got his total up to 25 as the Mighty Banyans were threatening again
- Payne would answer with a three along with Calvin Sirmans who tallied his only basket of the night on a three to put KU back ahead by eight
- With under a minute to play, Sirmans put the Seahawks up two from the line, then grabbed a defensive rebound on the other end and found Kabia for a fast-break slam
- Payne would go to the line two more times to end the game, hitting all four of his free throws and recording a new season high to close out the game

- The Seahawks are now 7-1 on the home floor
- Payne led Keiser in scoring for just the second time this season with 29 points and had an incredible second half that featured 26 points and 10-of-10 shooting
- With 16 points and 23 rebounds, Miszkiewicz tied Patrick Horstmann at 38 double-doubles at Keiser, now tied for the second most in program history
- His 23 rebounds are the third-most in a game in program history, and his 19 defensive rebounds tied a record he set himself last season
- Miszkiewicz also recorded four blocks in the contest to lead all players
- Though it was not his night of shooting, Sirmans continues to support the team with seven more assists, leading all players on Saturday
- In his season debut, Kabia tallied eight points, two rebounds, and two blocks
- As a team, Keiser held New College to a season-low in scoring with 62 points, 20 points below their season average
- The Mighty Banyans also had their worst shooting performance of the season at 35.5% from the floor
