Box Score With only Seahawks remaining in the bracket, the Keiser women's tennis team came home early and played their final two matches closer to home at the Palm Beach Gardens Tennis Center.
Violet Apisah and
Destinee Martins faced off to begin the day in a highly anticipated matchup. Both players had dominated in each of their matches leading into the final, but it was Apisah who continued to play strong. Apisah would go on to win 6-1, 6-3 over her current and former teammate, Martins. The singles title is the third consecutive ITA Regional Championship for Apisah, a mark never accomplished by a Seahawk in program history. After a lunch break, the girls returned to the court for the doubles match where they would play against
Eloise de Mooij and
Vanja Vidanovic. With the set score at 4-1 in favor of Apisah and Martins, the match would be called due to Vidanovic not being able to continue. The doubles win is the second for Apisah in three years and first for Martins.
When asked about the singles match, Head Coach
Daniel Finn said, "It's always fun for the coaches when it's just your two players competing for the championship. When you add the level that both girls played at, it makes for an easy and fun day. Proud of both Violet and Destinee for a great tournament, but Violet played at a high level throughout and deserved the title again this year."
On the doubles match, "Hated to see Vanja get sick there at the end, but that takes nothing away from the great tournament her and Eloise had. In the end, Violet and Destinee had a dominant tournament in doubles too and I'm proud of their efforts."
On dealing with emotions leading into the tournament, "Just proud. Period. Honestly, it's not fair, the amount of emotional and mental stress these ladies have been under this last week. We've said it the entire time they were playing more than just the field in the tournament. To see how they came together and literally played as a team the whole way through, it's just something remarkable. Very proud of each and everyone of them, and while we had individual winners, and I am extremely proud of Violet and Violet and Destinee in doubles in the end. All the girls need to know we're very proud of them, and they accomplished so much this week."
