Women's Tennis Dominates on Opening Day of ITA Regionals

Keiser women's tennis completed a perfect day one of tennis at the ITA Regional Championships in Lakeland, Fla. The ladies finished 4-0 in singles play and 3-0 in the first round of doubles action.

Owning four of the top five seeds in singles and the three top seeds in doubles, the expectations were high entering day one of the tournament. Each of the four singles players earned a bye in the opening round before defeating their opponents in straight sets in the Round of 32. Destinee Martins, Cato Tangkau, and Eloise de Mooij all earned their first win of their Keiser career while Violet Apisah picked up win number 118 as a Seahawk. In doubles, Yeva Kononovych and Tangkau moved into the quarterfinals first with an 8-3 result over Violetta Fedyaeva and Andrymar Valera. Apisah and Martins easily joined them with an 8-2 win while de Mooij and Vanja Vidanovic also picked up their first win as a pair on the other side of the bracket.

Coach's Corner
Head Coach Daniel Finn said, "We knew this wouldn't be easy. The girls are fighting way more than just their opponents in this tournament. Heavy hearts and lots of emotions added to the bullseye that everyone puts on our backs. That said, we're happy with today's results and that we found ways to get through the early rounds. The most important thing for us here is that we do this together and for each other. We keep stressing the point of getting through this together one day at a time, and that's what we did today. Tomorrow is a new day, and we will face it again as one."
