Andrew Burnette scored three rushing touchdowns as the No. 1-ranked Keiser football team defeated the Newberry Wolves, 42-33, on Saturday evening.
The win marked the second straight for the Seahawks over a NCAA Division II team as well as a team from the State of South Carolina.
Along with Burnette's three touchdowns, the Seahawks got two passing touchdowns from
Shea Spencer, who connected with
Refeno Vangates (40 yards) and
D'Andre Golden (35-yards). Spencer also rushed for another.
Keiser 7, Newberry 7
- The Wolves took an early lead with a pick-six of a pass by Shea Spencer
- NC's Jalen Stratford return the interception 80 yards to give the Wolves a 7-0 lead with 12:55 left in the first
- Keiser tied the game with a one-yard run by Andrew Burnette
- The score was the first of the year for Burnette
- The made extra point by Nico Cavanillas knotted the game up at 7-7 with 9:24 on the game clock
Keiser 21, Newberry 17
- The Seahawks opened the quarter with a 40-yard touchdown pass as Spencer found Refeno Vangates on a post route
- Score gave the Seahawks a seven-point lead with 14:44 left in the half
- Newberry answered with a 30-yard field goal to cut the Seahawk lead to 14-10 (10:39)
- The Wolves took a 17-14 lead following a rushing touchdown by quarterback Reed Charpia (2:33)
- Spencer recorded his second TD pass of the quarter with a 35-yard strike to D'Andre Golden
- The score and extra point gave KU a 21-17 lead with 26 second left in the half
Keiser 28, Newberry 17
- Despite a 60-yard run by Jaden Meizinger which got Keiser deep in Newberry territory, the Wolves took advantage of a Vangates fumble with 13:27 on the game clock
- Evan Jackson recorded the first interception of his Keiser career with a pick at the Newberry 40-yard line, giving the ball to the Seahawks with 4:58 left in the quarter
- Spencer extended the Seahawk's lead with a three-yard touchdown run - the sixth of his career
- The TD and extra point gave Keiser a 28-17 edge with 1:11 on the game clock
Keiser 42, Newberry 33
- Newberry pulled within four points following a 33-yard touchdown run by Quez Spells (13:49)
- On the ensuing drive, Keiser needed just one play to respond
- Burnette scored his second touchdown of the game with a 75-yard run
- With the extra point, the Seahawks led 35-24 with 13:36 left in the game
- Newberry added three points with a 30-yard field goal as Keiser held a 35-27 lead with 9:35 remaining in the game
- The Wolves looked to produce three more points with field-goal attempt with 5:35 left in the game
- However, defensive lineman Byron May blocked the attempt which was returned by KU's Justin Carcel to the Newberry 14-yard line
- Four plays later, Burnette scored his third TD of the game with a three-yard run, extending the Seahawk lead to 42-27 with 3:18 left in the game
