Keiser Advances to AAC Championship Game with 12-10 Win Over No. 3 WIU

Paced by hat tricks from Kegan Hufford and JP Prather, Keiser men's lacrosse defeated Webber International to advance to the AAC championship game for the second year in a row. In a thrilling game in which neither team led by more than two goals, KU was able to come out on top and set up a rematch with the Reinhardt Eagles. The Seahawks will take on No. 1 Reinhardt tomorrow at 2:30 p.m for the AAC title. 

First Quarter
Keiser 4, WIU 5
  • Keiser struck first with an unassisted goal from AJ Badik 51 seconds into the game.
  • Webber answered with a goal at the 12:48 mark. 
  • After three scoreless minutes, JP Prather found the net. 
  • With 7:48 on the clock, Zach Crotwell scored in transition to put Keiser up 3-1.
  • However it wouldn't get any easier for the Seahawks, and the Warriors countered with a 4-0 scoring run to take a 5-3 lead.
  • With just two seconds to go in the quarter, Keiser was able to break the scoring run with a nifty goal by Ryan Rundle with a Braeden Niemy assist.
Second Quarter
Keiser 7, WIU 6
  • At the 11:25 mark, Keiser capitalized on a Webber turnover to set up a Kegan Hufford goal to tie the game.
  • The Warriors retook the lead at 9:02. 
  • Chris Rayburn was able to win the ensuing face-off, and one minute later JP Prather scored again to tie the game once again. 
  • Lucas Green and the KU defense fended off several Webber shots in the next four minutes and following a successful clear, Hufford scored with a Logan Dujon assist.
  • Both teams fired off shots in the final minute, but the half came to an end with Keiser up by one. 
Third Quarter
Keiser 9, WIU 8
  • Both squads traded shots and penalties for the first six minutes of the half, until Kegan Hufford scored with an AJ Badik assist with 9:00 remaining in the third. 
  • Following a KU turnover on a failed clear, Webber's Christian Tapia got a goal to cut the Keiser lead in half. 
  • With 4:23 left in the quarter the Seahawks committed a holding penalty, and the Warriors converted the man-up opportunity to tie the game. 
  • Shane Cassidy was able to cause a turnover, and a Trevor Ellick groundball pickup led to Kegan Hufford scoring his fourth goal of the day to put the Seahawks back in front. 
Fourth Quarter
Keiser 12, WIU 10
  • With 13:28 on the clock, WIU's Christian Tapia scored a man-down goal to tie the game yet again. 
  • In a wild sequence, Ryan Rundle collected the ball after it bounced high in the air off the goal post, and fired it home for an unassisted goal with 10:49 left in the game.
  • With 8:26 on the clock, the game was tied once again with a Webber goal. 
  • After Ryan Rundle caused a Warrior turnover, Braeden Niemy scored what would become the game winning goal at the 5:52 mark, with Badik providing the assist. 
  • Keiser was able to get a possession following a WIU turnover, and with 2:26 remaining, JP Prather fired a shot into the corner of the net to complete a hat trick. 
  • The Warriors fought to even the score, but the Keiser defense stood its ground in the final two minutes of the game, and Jackson Marshall caused a WIU turnover to seal the game.

  • Keiser outshot WIU 47-35. KU has outshot its opponent in 26 consecutive games.
  • KU caused 7 Warrior turnovers, many of which came in key situations when KU needed a defensive stand.
  • Chris Rayburn went 10-24 on faceoffs with seven groundball pickups. 
  • The Seahawks went 18-22 on clears. 
  • Keiser picked up 23 groundballs. 
  • Lucas Green was credited with five saves. 
  • Keiser is now 9-0 all-time versus Webber International.
