Flag Football Heads to SUN Finals with 40-18 Win over Webber

The Keiser flag football team advanced to the 2024 Sun Conference Flag Football finals with a 40-18 win over the Webber Int'l Warriors on Friday. The victory improved Keiser to 13-1 on the year and 9-0 all-time versus WIU. With the semifinal victory, Keiser will be making its third appearance in the Sun Conference Finals. 

The Seahawks were led by quarterback and SUN Offensive Player of the Year Jazmin Rhoden, who completed 16-of-23 passes for 206 yards and five touchdowns. Chloe Griffin grabbed a team-best seven catches for 94 yards and one touchdown. Brianna Hernandez-Silva accounted for three total touchdowns, catching two of Rhoden's TDs and rushing for another. Ashlea Klam grabbed two touchdown passes to tie the school record for touchdown receptions in a season (Kennedy Foster - 20 in 2022). 

Defensively, Sarah Villarreal posted a team-high four flag pulls versus the Warriors. Sophia Caprio recorded her third interception of the season and the Seahawk's 37th of the years (school single-season record). 
 

First Quarter
Webber Int'l 12, Keiser 6
  • The Warriors got the scoring started with a short field as Keiser turned the ball over on downs from its own 28-yard line.
  • On play later, WIU scored as Samantha Wilson connected with Rylee Bosler for 28 yards.
  • Following the missed extra point, the Warriors led, 6-0, with 7:23 left in the first.
  • WIU got the ball back following an interception by Bosler of a Jazmin Rhoden pass.
  • The Warriors took advantage of the KU turnover, turning into six points with a Wilson pass to Jasmine Henry for the score (5:03).
  • Three minutes later, Keiser drove 66 yards on six plays to cut WIU's lead, 12-6.
  • Ashlea Klam grabbed her 19th touchdown of the season off a 10-yard pass from Rhoden.

Second Quarter
Keiser 21, Webber Int'l 12
  • The Seahawks took the lead with 3:55 left in the half as Rhoden found Chloe Griffin for 16 yards and the score.
  • A successful two-point conversion gave the Seahawks a 14-12 lead.
  • Keiser closed out the the half with a one-yard run by Brianna Hernandez-Silva with 33 seconds on the game clock. 
  • A good extra-point attempt made it 21-12 entering halftime.

Third Quarter

Keiser 27, Webber Int'l 12
  • Rhoden threw her third touchdown pass of the day with an eight-yard toss to Hernandez-Silva for the only score of the quarter.
  • Rhoden rushed for the extra point, giving Keiser a 27-12 lead with 5:52 on the game clock.

Fourth Quarter
Keiser 40, Webber Int'l 18
  • Klam caught her second touchdown pass of the game with an 18-yard reception from Rhoden (8:42).
  • The touchdown pass was her 20th of the season, tying Kennedy Foster's single-season record for touchdown receptions (20 in 2022).
  • Herandez-Silva found hte endzone for the third time with a one-yard pass from Rhoden (her fifth passing touchdown of the game) as Keiser extended its lead to 40-12 with 2:55 left in the game.
  • WIU scored the final points of the game as Wilson connected with Gabby Franzose with eight yards (40-18; 00:16).

Up Next

Keiser will face the Thomas Night Hawks in the 2024 Sun Conference Championship Game on Saturday, April 27. Game time is set for noon.
