Women's Basketball Picks Up Key SUN Victory at the Line, 69-66

The Keiser women's basketball team earned the season-series sweep of the St. Thomas Bobcats with a 69-66 win at the Fernandez Family Center on Wednesday night. The Seahawks scored five straight points from the free-throw line in the final minute of action to come away with the three-point victory.

Elliana Schaefer hit two big free throws with 10 seconds left in the game to give Keiser a 67-66 lead. Following a missed shot by STU with three seconds left in the game, Mimmi Hahne, who grabbed the rebound on the miss, was fouled and went to the line. The first-year Seahawks made both shots to seal the victory, 69-66.
 
Schaefer finished the game with a team-high 20 points (her fifth 20-point game in the last six outings). Also scoring in double figures were Hahne (12), Julia Fitzwater (12), and Taylor Jones (10). Elise Ellison grabbed a team-best 12 rebounds. The Seahawks finished the night, shooting 16-of-18 from the charity stripe (81.8 percent).

First Quarter
St. Thomas 19, Keiser 14
  • Keiser opened the game with a 5-0 lead following buckets by Ellise Ellison (2-pointer at 9:18) and Mimmi Hahne (3-pointer at 8:22).
  • The Bobcats responded with a 7-0 run to take a 7-5 lead with 6:07 left in the first. 
  • A 4-0 run by STU gave the Bobcats at 13-9 lead with 3:27 on the game clock. 
  • Keiser kept it a one possession game until the Bobcats pushed their lead to five, 17-12 (0:57).

Second Quarter
St. Thomas 40, Keiser 37
  • An 8-0 run by the Seahawks to open the second gave Keiser a 22-19 lead with 8:42 left in the half.
  • A layup by Elliana Schaefer with 7:05 on the game clock gave Keiser a 26-20 lead.
  • STU used a 9-2 run gave the home team the lead, 29-28, with 4:45 remaining.
  • The Bobcats led, 38-31 following a made free throw by Paige McDonald with 1:29 on the clock to cap off a 9-3 run.
  • A 6-0 run by the Seahawks cut the Bobcat lead to one, 38-37 (0:17).
  • Bogatz hit a shot as time expired as STU took a 40-37 lead at the half.

Third Quarter

Keiser 51, St. Thomas 51
  • STU out-scored Keiser, 5-2, to start the second half and take a 45-39 lead with 8:21 on the game clock.
  • Keiser tied the game, 47-47, following a pair of made free throws by Taylor Jones (3:52).
  • Julia Fitzwater gave the Seahawks a 51-50 lead with 0:42 left in the third with a pair of made free throws.

Fourth Quarter

Keiser 69, St .Thomas 66
  • Fitzwater got the final 10 minutes started with a made jumper at the 9:35 mark (53-51).
  • A 6-0 run by STU gave the Bobcats a 59-55 lead with 6:49 left in the game.
  • Jones tied the game, 62-62, with her second made bucket of the game (3:34).
  • Jones again tied the game, 64-64, this time with a pair of made free throws (2:19).
  • Out of a Keiser timeout with 14 second left in the game, trailing 66-65, Schaefer drew the foul and went to the line for two shots.
  • Schaefer hit both shots as Keiser led, 67-66 with 11 seconds left in the game.
  • The Bobcats called time out for a chance to win the game. However, a shot by Bogatz missed with Hahne grabbing the defensive rebound.
  • Fouled on the rebound, Hahne hit both chances to give Keiser the lead, 69-66 with three second left.
  • STU's McDonald went to the line missing the first followed by a lane violation by Bogatz, giving Keiser the ball with one second left in the game.

  • With the win, Keiser moves to 17-10 on the season (9-4 SUN).
  • With the win, the Seahawks improve to 12-26 all-time versus the Bobcats.
  • Keiser has now won four of the last six versus St. Thomas.
