Keiser men's basketball showed no signs of fear traveling to No. 24 Ave Maria on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Gyrenes 87-70 at the Tom Golisano Field House in Ave Maria, Fla. The Seahawks held the second-best scoring offense in the NAIA to just 70 points on the afternoon, 24 points below their average.
Keiser once again had four players in double digits, led by
Calvin Sirmans who scored 21 points and recorded a game-high 11 assists. Just behind him were
Justin Nichelson and
Tyler Poindexter who had 19 each in the afternoon.
Vincent Miszkiewicz once again was a dominant force down low, grabbing 18 rebounds and securing his 22nd double-double with 13 points.
Keiser opened up a double-digit lead with 6:30 to play in the first half as part of a 14-run that would not be given up for the remainder of the game.
Keiser 42, Ave Maria 30
- Keiser jumped out to a 10-5 lead early with Tyler Poindexter knocking down two threes.
- Ave Maria responded with a run of their own to tie the game at 19 all with 11:54 on the clock.
- With the game still tied at 24, Keiser erupted on a 14-0 run as Poindexter hit his fifth three-pointer of the contest.
- The Gyrenes would get the final bucket of the half to cut into the lead, but the Seahawks would have a 12-point advantage going into the break, 42-30.
Keiser 87, Ave Maria 70
- Keiser carried their momentum into the second half with an 11-5 run capped by a Brandon Farmer layup before Tyler Poindexter stole the ensuing inbound and scored to put KU ahead by 20 with 15:36 on the clock.
- The Gyrenes would bounce back with a 13-5 run to cut the lead to 12.
- The Seahawks would have an answer with Jonathan Paul and Vincent Miszkiewicz sharing the big-man duties, scoring four each over the next four minutes to put KU back ahead by 19.
- Ave Maria would rattle off five straight points before Calvin Sirmans and Miszkiewicz would link up to secure each of their double-doubles on a reverse alley-oop with Sirmans recording assist 10 and Miszkiewicz recording point number 11.
- Keiser coasted to the finish line, holding on to a 17-point lead at the final buzzer.
