No. 2 Keiser women's soccer needed a hero on Tuesday night in the NAIA Round of 16, and Delfina Lombardi answered the call, scoring the game-winning goal in overtime to defeat the Missouri Valley College Vikings, 3-2. The first half was full of action as the Vikings scored on a penalty kick, before the Seahawks notched consecutive goals from Lauren Riley and Maria Vilhena. The Vikings would tie the game before the break and send the teams into halftime knotted at 2-2. Most of the second half would be played in the midfield as both teams took seldom chances before the game was sent to overtime. The Seahawks would not waste any time as a cross from Georgia Little would find Lombardi in the box who would head home the goal and send the Seahawks to the next round.

Keiser moves on to the NAIA Quarterfinals, where they will face the winner of (11)Tennessee Southern and (6)Aquinas on Thursday, November 5, at 7:00 p.m. CST.


How it Happened
  • It was a relatively quiet start to the game after a pair of Keiser shots were dealt with by the Vikings
  • In the 17th minute, a ball was played in by the Vikings on a free kick, and a whistle blew for a push in the back in the box. Carla Carmona stepped forward for MVC and scored the penalty chance to go ahead, 1-0
  • Keiser pushed forward on the other end, producing five consecutive corner kicks in the next five minutes
  • On the fifth corner, Georgia Little found Lauren Riley at the back post who guided the effort home and tied the game at 1-1
  • Less than 60 seconds later, Ramona Kannady found Maria Vilhena open in the box, but her shot would ping off the left post and our
  • In the 38th minute, Riley would play through Little with a backheel pass before Little laced a shot that would be saved before bouncing off the crossbar, where Vilhena was able to head home the opportunity and put KU back in front 2-1
  • The Vikings would have an immediate response, as from their own corner kick, Marta Carrasco Mesa sent a high header looping over the head of Maude Rouanet and into the side netting
  • The second half would be relatively quiet as the Seahawks attempted to break down the Vikings defense
  • MVC had a chance in the 78th minute on a free kick that followed a tactical foul from Steingerður Snorradóttir, but the shot by the Vikings would be easily saved
  • Keiser would get a chance in the 79th minute with a pair of shots that would be saved by the MVC keeper
  • In the 82nd minute, Lauren Riley would fire from distance with a rolling shot that would be saved once again by Marina Barabara Bujalance
  • Less than a minute later, Missouri Valley was through on goal, but Roaunet came out of the box and slide tackled the ball away from danger
  • With nothing to separate the two sides in regulation, the game would go into overtime
  • Just over a minute into overtime, Vilhena had a clear chance, but her shot was saved by a quick reaction from Bujalance
  • A minute later, Little collected a cleared ball and crossed it into the box where it found Delfina Lombardi who headed home the game-winner

Game Notes
  • Keiser moves to 16-1-1 this season and 31-13-2 all-time in the NAIA postseason 
  • The Seahawks will advance to their ninth NAIA Quarterfinal where they hold a 6-2-0 overall record
  • Keiser improves to 22-12-8 in overtime games all-time
  • Lombardi's goal was just the fourth of the season and her first game-winner
  • Little assisted on all three goals for Keiser, moving her into double digits with 10 this season
  • She becomes the first player in program history with three assists in a postseason game
  • Both of Keiser's leading goalscorers chipped in as Riley scored her 16th goal and Vilhena scored her 12th of the season
  • Rouanet was more active than the one save suggests but picks up her 16th win regardlesss
  • The Seahawks outshot the Vikings 22-5 (10-3 on goal)
