The No. 1-ranked Keiser Seahawks improved to 4-0 (1-0 SUN) on the season with a 31-27 win at No. 6 St. Thomas on Saturday afternoon.
 
Win the win, Keiser also improved to 7-0 all-time versus the Bobcats. The loss was the first of the season for STU.
 
The Seahawks outgained the Bobcats, 485-298, while holding a 215-63-yard edge in rushing yards.
 
Keiser jumped out to a 24-3 lead before the Bobcats scored 24-unanswered points. Trailing by four, 27-24, with just over five minutes left in the game, Keiser responded with a 70-yard touchdown pass from Shea Spencer to Refeno Vangates for the game-winning TD.
 
Vangates finished the day with four catches for 142 yards and two touchdowns while Spencer completed 17-of-27 passes for 270 yards and three touchdowns. On the ground, Keiser was led by Andrew Burnette, who rushed of 113 yards on 17 carries and one score.

 


First Quarter
Keiser 24, St. Thomas 3
  • Despite winning the coin toss, St. Thomas elected to receive the opening kickoff
  • On that opening return, the Bobcats' Jerome Mitchell fumbled the ball which was recovered by KU's CJ Gilmore
  • Seven plays later, Nico Cavanillas got Keiser on the board with a 25-yard field goal as the Seahawks led, 3-0, with 12:17 on the clock
  • The Keiser defense forced an STU three-and-out, giving the Seahawks the ball back at the 10:33 mark
  • A 59-yard rush by Andrew Burnette set up the Seahawks with first-and-10 from the STU 18-yard line
  • Three plays later the junior running back notched his fifth rushing TD of the season with a four-yard run
  • The made extra point gave Keiser a 10-0 lead with 8:12 left in the first 
  • Again, the Seahawk defense forced a three-and-out, setting up a one-play, 55-yard score as Shea Spencer connected with Refeno Vangates for the team's first touchdown pass of the contest
  • The Bobcats cut the Keiser lead to 17-3 following a 31-yard field goal by Darrel Dunbar (3:18)
  • Keiser closed out the first stanza with a seven-play, 77-yard drive, capped off by a four-yard touchdown pass from Spencer to D'Andre Golden, pushing the Seahawk lead to 24-3 with 12 second on the game clock

Second Quarter
Keiser 24, St. Thomas 3
  • The second quarter was a defensive battle as each team had four drives but could produce no points
  • The Seahawks produced 73 yards of total offense in the second while holding the Bobcats to just 63
  • Keiser looked to add three points with a 49-yard field goal attempt by Cavanillas as time expired but the attempt sailed wide right

Third Quarter
Keiser 24, St. Thomas 13
  • A touchdown pass from Keely Watson to David Hayes for 16 yards pulled the Bobcats within 14, 24-10 (11:07)
  • Later in the quarter, STU added three more points with a 31-yard field goal by Zachary Alvarez, making it a 24-13 game with 2:00 remaining in the third

Fourth Quarter
Keiser 31, St. Thomas 27
  • The Bobcats opened the quarter, completing a seven-play, 76-yard drive, following a 16-yard TD pass from Watson to Khalitri Zow
  • After the missed two-point conversion attempt, the Seahawk's lead was five, 24-19 (13:05)
  • On the ensuing drive, Keiser ate up 6:57 on a drive that lasted 14 plays
  • However, the 14th play of the drive was a 58-yard interception return for a touchdown by defensive end Nicholas Engler, giving STU the lead
  • A successful two-point conversion, pushed the Bobcat lead to 27-24
  • Spencer rebounded from the miscue with a 70-yard touchdown pass to Vangates on the very next drive for the go-ahead score with 5:11 left in the contest
  • STU got the ball with just over five minutes to play but punted the ball away following a three-and out, giving Keiser possession with 3:16 on the game clock
  • The Seahawks ran out the clock, including the final two snaps from the "victory formation"

  • Holding the Bobcats to just 63 yards rushing on the day, the Seahawks have held the opposition to under 100 yards rushing in two straight games
  • Wide out Refeno Vangates posted career highs in receptions (4), receiving yards (142), and receiving touchdowns (2)
  • The 142 yards receiving were a school record
  • Andrew Burnette produced his fifth 100-yard rushing performance, recording 113 yards on 17 carries with one touchdown
  • Jaden Meizinger added 79 yards on ground on 19 carries
  • Meizinger became the second player in school history to reach the 4,000-yard plateau for career rushing, finishing the game with 4,008
  • Shea Spencer tied his career high in passing touchdowns with three on Saturday
  • Spencer completed 17-of-27 passes for 270 yards versus the Bobcats
  • With the win, Keiser improves to 24-2 all-time during the month of October
