Three double-doubles led the way for Keiser men's basketball as they took down No. 16 Florida Memorial on Saturday evening in Miami Gardens, 78-74. Justin Nichelson led all scorers with 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Calvin Sirmans finished five steals shy of a triple-double, tallying 15 points and 11 assists. The ever-reliable Vincent Miszkiewicz extended his double-double streak to 19 games with 11 points and 14 rebounds. 


The Seahawks will have a quick turnaround with their final non-conference game of the season ahead of them on Monday when they travel to Johnson University. Tipoff from the Sun Dome in Kissimmee, Fla. is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.

Following a missed layup from the Lions with seven seconds left, Brandon Farmer collected a rebound and went to the line, sinking a free throw to secure the win.
 
 
How it Happened


First Half
FMU 40, Keiser 35
  • Florida Memorial started hot out of the gates, taking a 6-0 lead before Jonathan Paul got Keiser on the board with a layup.
  • Justin Nichelson and Vincent Miszkiewicz went to work over the next four minutes, drawing the Seahawks back within two, 13-15, with 13:22 showing.
  • The Lions began to show their strength as seven different players scored to open a 31-17 lead.
  • Keiser responded with a 16-4 run with Tyler Poindexter, Miszkiewicz, and Nichelson all scoring fastbreak baskets to put KU within two, 33-35.
  • Brandon Farmer sank two free throws to end the half with the Lions leading at the break, 40-35.

Second Half
Keiser 78, FMU 74
  • The beginning of the second half would have a delay as FMU staff adjusted the rim Keiser was shooting on during the first half.
  • The Lions did not seem bothered, using an 11-6 run to take a 10-point lead.
  • Keiser would have an answer with Farmer and Poindexter hitting consecutive treys as the Seahawks cut the lead down to five with 13:26 on the clock.
  • The momentum would continue for Keiser as Tylar Cerez gave the Seahawks their first lead from the free throw line with 9:56 to play.
  • After a few scoreless minutes, Calvin Sirmans connected with Nichelson for an alley-oop before a Farmer three put KU up 65-59 with less than five minutes to play.
  • The two sides would trade baskets as Keiser maintained the six-point lead with 2:13 on the clock, 72-66.
  • FMU would not back down, scoring the next four points before Nichelson was sent to the line and made his two to make it 74-70 with just under 90 seconds to play.
  • Jaiden Guice would hit a three to put the Lions within one, but Sirmans would sink both of his free throws to put KU back up three with 15 seconds left.
  • The Lions would drive to the basket on the ensuing possession, but the layup rimmed out, and Farmer grabbed the rebound before getting fouled with five seconds left.
  • Farmer would miss the first but make the second and secure the ranked road win, 78-74.

  • Keiser improves to 13-6 on the year with the win and enters a three-way tie for second place in the Sun Conference standings with a 4-3 record.
  • The Seahawks move to 4-2 in road games this season and 2-0 against ranked opponents.
  • Keiser now leads the all-time series over Florida Memorial, 30-8.
  • Justin Nichelson led the way for the Seahawks with 22 points and 11 rebounds, his first double-double since game one.
  • Calvin Sirmans pitched in with a double-double of his own with 15 points and 11 assists on the night which, tied a career-high.

  • The Seahawks were able to get to the free throw line often and make it count, going 24-of-30 from the charity stripe.
  • Keiser won the rebounding battle on the night, handing the Lions just their second rebounding loss of the season, 43-37.
