Women's Basketball Moves to 2-0 on the Year with 84-67 win at Thomas (Ga.)

The Keiser women's basketball team improved to 2-0 to start the season with an 84-67 win at Thomas (Ga.) on Tuesday night. For the third straight season, the Seahawks begin the year with a 2-0 record.

The Seahawks had four players reach double-figures as Elise Ellison (19), Julia Fitzwater (19), Halle Traylor (15), and Elliana Schaefer (10) guided Keiser to the 17-point victory.

How it Happened


First Quarter

Thomas (Ga.) 19, Keiser 17
  • Keiser got the scoring started with a made jumper by Elise Ellison with 9:45 on the game clock.
  • With the score tied at 4-4, TU's Jasmyn Studamire hit a three to give the Night Hawks a 7-4 advantage (7:27).
  • Julia Fitzwater made a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 7-6 (7:08).
  • Down 12-7, Halle Traylor went to the line, hitting both attempts to cut the deficit to three, 12-9, with 5:03 on the clock.
  • The Night Hawks pushed their lead to 15-9 with a 3-pointer by Sheridan Green.
  • KU responded with a layup by Traylor with 3:08 left in the first (15-11).
  • Traylor's layup sparked a 6-0 run for the Seahawks as Taylor Jones tied the game at 15-15.
  • TU went on a 4-0 run to regain the lead, 19-15. 
  • Zariah Jenkins hit a jumper with 1:04 on the game clock to cut the TU lead to two (19-17).

Second Quarter

Keiser 37, Thomas (Ga.) 35
  • The Seahawks opened the second quarter scoring five straight points.
  • Ellison's layup with 9:55 on the clock tied the game, 19-19.
  • Fitzwater followed that up with a 3-pointer as Keiser took the lead, 22-19.
  • The run continued as Fitzwater hit her second 3-pointer on the contest as the Seahawks led, 25-19 with 7;25 on clock.
  • Out of a Thomas timeout, the Night Hawks scored their first points of the quarter with a Studamire layup (25-21).
  • Ellison gave Keiser a 28-26 lead on a three-point play off an assist by Jones.
  • Fitzwater gave Keiser an eight-point lead with a 3-pointer at the 4:50 mark (32-26).
  • After the Night Hawks scored four straight, cutting the Keiser lead to one, Ellison added her 13th point with a layup, 36-33.

Third Quarter

Keiser 57, Thomas (Ga.) 54
  • Off an Ellison assist, Traylor hit a 3-pointer with 9:42 on the game clock to give Keiser a 40-35 lead to start the half.
  • Elliana Schaefer pushed the Seahawks lead to 42-35 with a three-point play.
  • A 5-0 run cut the Keiser lead to 43-40.
  • Ellison made it a five-point game with layup off a Traylor pass, 45-40 (9:10).
  • Schaefer scored her eighth point of the game on a steal, 48-42 (8:17).
  • Following a steal by Kyra Long, Jones converted a layup with 6:44 left in the third as Keiser lef 52-26.
  • Two made free throws by Mimmi Hahne pushed the Seahawks lead to nine, 52-46 (4:57).
  • A 4-0 run by the Night Hawks cut Keiser's lead, 53-50 (2:11).
  • Long put Keiser up 55-50 with her first bucket of the game at the 1:46 mark.
  • Ellison (off an assist by Schaefer) gave Keiser a 57-54 edge with 49 seconds left in the third.

Fourth Quarter

Keiser 84, Thomas (Ga.) 67
  • Each team hit two-point buckets to start the final frame, 59-56 (9:48).
  • Fitzwater hit a shot from downtown (off a pass from Traylor) as Keiser led 62-57 with 7:14 left in the game.
  • Ellison gave keiser a seven-point lead with a layup at the 6:47 mark (65-58).
  • A jumper by TU's Green cut the Keiser lead to 65-60 with 6:02 left to play.
  • With 5:40 left in the contest, Traylor was sent to the line and hit both free throws, 67-60.
  • Fitzwater extended the Seahawks lead with a 3-pointer, 70-60 (5:15).
  • A 5-0 run by KU forced Thomas (Ga.) to call a timeout (5:07).
  • The Night Hawks pulled within five, 72-67 with 2:48 left in the game.
  • A 12-0 run by Keiser closed out the game, 84-67.



Game Notes

  • With the win, Keiser improves to 2-0 to start the season. 
  • It marks the third straight season in which the Seahawks opened the season 2-0.
  • The Seahawks improve to 15-7 all-time versus Thomas (Ga.), including an 8-4 record all-time in Thomasville, Ga.
  • The Seahawks have now won four straight over the Night Hawks.
  • Keiser is now averaging 66.3 points per game all-time versus TU.
  • The win marks victory No. 120 for Head Coach Pam Oswald at Keiser.
