Women's Basketball Opens New Year with 72-60 Win over Coastal Georgia

Led by Shykim Gillion's 21 points, the Keiser women's basketball team opened the 2023 calendar year with a 72-60 win over the Coastal Georgia Mariners on Tuesday afternoon. Gillion also led the Seahawks in rebounds (9) and assists (7). Joining Gillion among the leading scorers were Kennedy Schlabach (14) and Janiece Thomas (11).

Keiser used a 7-0 run early in the second quarter to put its lead to double-digits, 26-16, with 6:24 on the game clock. It was a lead that the Seahawks maintained the remainder of the game for the team's fourth straight win at home.

First Quarter

Keiser 19, Coastal Georgia 13
  • The Mariners opened the game with a 6-0 run through the first four minutes of action.
  • The Seahawks responded with a run of their own, rattling off eight straight to take an 8-6 lead with 4:54 on the game clock.
  • Shykim Gillion scored back-to-back buckets, giving Keiser a 12-8 lead with 3:55 left in the first.
  • Julia Fitzwater sank a trey with 2:19 on the game clock, making it a 15-11 game.
  • Gillion extended the Keiser lead to 17-11 with a made jumper at the 1:25 mark.
  • After a made basket by CCGA's Iesha Rhodin, KU's Taylor Jones converted a pair of free throws to give the Seahawks a six-point lead after one.

Second Quarter

Keiser 36, Coastal Georgia 24
  • A layup by Gillion with 7:06 remaining in the half gave Keiser an eight-point lead, 24-16.
  • Janiece Thomas gave the Seahawks a double-digit lead, 26-16, with 6:24 left in the half.
  • Jones made it a 30-19 game with a score in the paint (3:57).
  • A 3-pointer by Thomas with 3:17 on the game clock gave Keiser its largest lead of the game, 33-19. 

Third Quarter

Keiser 54, Coastal Georgia 43
  • Elliana Schaefer pushed KU's lead to 38-25 with a made bucket at the 9:09 mark.
  • Coastal Georgia's Joyce Jordan cut the Keiser lead to single-digits, 38-30, with 7:24 left in the third.
  • Gillion brought the KU lead to 12, 43-31, draining a jump shot with 5:20 on the game clock.
  • CCGA's Jordan went to the line with 4:11 on the clock, sinking both attempts and bringing the Mariners within nine, 45-36.
  • The Seahawks regained their double-digit lead following a basket by Thomas (4:04), 47-36.
  • Keiser maintained its double-digit advantage, leading 54-43 after three quarters of action.

Fourth Quarter
Keiser 72, Coastal Georgia 60
  • The Seahawks scored four straight points to start the quarter and push their lead to 57-43 with 9:30 left in the game.
  • The Mariners went on a 5-0 run to bring the Keiser lead down to 59-50 with 8:00 on the game clock.
  • Both teams exchanged buckets over the next five minutes before a jumper by Andressa Nascimento (2:17) and a layup by Elise Ellison-Coons (1:47) extended Seahawks lead to 72-59.
