Women's Basketball Suffers Six-Point Loss at Ave Maria, 57-51

The Keiser women's basketball team won suffered a 57-51 loss at Ave Maria on Thursday night. Held scoreless in the final 1:20 of the game, Keiser dropped to 3-4 in Sun Conference action. Shykim Gillion led all Seahawks with 12 points while Elise Ellison-Coons notched a team-best nine boards to go along with 10 points.

Ave Maria's Casey Humphrey forced a turnover with 22 seconds left in the game as Keiser trailed 52-51, resulting in a pair of made free throws which gave AMU a three-point lead. Unable to sink the game-tying 3-pointer with less than 10 second remaining in the contest, the Seahawks were forced to send the Gyrenes to the line one more time as AMU extended its lead, 57-51.

First Quarter
Keiser 16, Ave Maria 6
  • After the Gyrenes scored the first points of the game (9:15), Elise Ellison-Coons tied the contest with a pair of made free throw with 7:16 on the game clock.
  • Kennedy Schlabach gave the Seahawks a 7-6 lead after the first made 3-pointer of the game with 4:03 left in the first.
  • Elliana Schaefer extended the Keiser lead to 9-6 with 3:16 on the game clock, hitting the team's second consecutive bucket.
  • After a Gyrene's timeout, Janiece Thomas converted a layup to make it an 11-6 game with 1:58 on the game clock.
  • Julia Fitzwater scored hit a 3-pointer with 31 seconds on the clock to push the Keiser lead to 14-6.
  • Taylor Jones hit a layup as time expired as the Seahawks ended the first on a 12-0 run.

Second Quarter

  • A layup by AMU's Grace Field cut the Keiser lead to 16-8 with 7:59 left in the half.
  • The Gyrenes scored their second straight bucket to cut the lead to six, 16-10 (6:50).
  • Shykim Gillion got on the board with a made jumper at the 6:50 mark (18-10 KU).
  • The Gyrenes pulled within five, 18-13, following a made layup by Mckenzi Lyons with 4:04 on the clock.
  • Casey Humphrey made it a one-possession game, 18-15, with a bucket at the 2:19 mark.
  • Humphrey again scored to cut the Keiser lead to one, 18-17. with 1:25 left in the half.
  • Jones ended the Gyrenes run with a made free throw (1-of-2) with 1:06 on the clock, 19-17.

Third Quarter
Ave Maria 37, Keiser 33
  • Gillion scored the first basket of the second half on an assist from Schlabach to give Keiser a 21-17 lead with 8:49 on the clock.
  • AMU responded on the next possession with a layup by Field, 21-19 (8:19).
  • Not to be outdone, Ellison-Coons scored on a three-point play with 7:54 left in the third to give the Seahawks a 24-19 lead.
  • The Gyrenes went on a 5-0 run to tie the game at 24-24 (6:28).
  • AMU took the lead, 26-24, with a layup by Abby Phibbs with 6:01 on the game clock.
  • Schaefer tied the game with a made jumper with 5:34 left in the third, 26-26.
  • Gillion gave the Seahawks a 31-30 lead with her first 3-pointer of the game (1:51).
  • Monica Behrend answered with a 3-pointer for the Gyrenes, giving AMU a 33-31 lead with 1:25 remaining in the third.
  • Thomas tied the game with a pair of made free throws with 1:02 on the game clock.
  • Humphrey scored four straight points to end the quarter, giving AMU the 37-33 lead.

Fourth Quarter

  • Fitzwater made her second 3-pointer of the game to cut AMU's lead to 38-36 with 8:43 left in the contest.
  • Thirty seconds later Fitzwater hit her second triple of the quarter to give Kesier a 39-38 lead.
  • Thomas made it an 8-0 run for the Seahawks with a made jumper at the 7:41 mark (41-38).
  • Humphrey went to the line with 6:01 remaining in the contest and gave Ave Maria a 42-41 lead, making both attempts.
  • Ellison-Coons made 1-of-2 from the line with 5:05 to tie the game at 42-42.
  • Humphrey put the Gyrenes back on top, 44-42, with a bucket at the 4:51 mark.
  • Gillion tied the game at 45-45 with her second basket from 3-point range (assisted by Schlabach) (4:03).
  • After a defensive rebound by Jones, Gillion scored her 12th points of the game with a layup at the 3:22 mark (47-45).
  • Field tied the game for the Gyrenes with her fourth bucket of the game, 47-47 (3:01).
  • Both teams exchanged buckets over the next two minutes as the contest was tied 51-51 with 1:08 left to play.
  • Field (1-of-2 from the line) gave the Gyrenes a 52-51 lead with 52 seconds left in the game.
  • With the Seahawks forced to foul, Phibbs hit two from the line to push AMU's lead to 54-51 with 16 second on the game clock.
  • Out of a Keiser timeout, a 3-point attempt by Schaefer was unable to fall, forcing the Seahawks to fouls and send AMU to the line.
  • Elena Barnes made 1-of-2 from the line to give the Gyrenes a 55-51 advantage (00:08).
  • Barnes went to the line two more times to extend AMU's lead to 57-51.

The Seahawks return home to host the Southeastern Fire on Saturday, January 14.  Tipoff from the Student Life Center is set for 2:00 p.m. Saturday's game will be the team's 7th Annual We Back Pat Game as the Seahawks honor the late Coach Pat Summitt who passed away from Alzheimer's disease in June 2016. As part of the game, Keiser has partnered with The Pat Summitt Foundation to raise funds to fight to end  Alzheimer's.
