No. 1 women's soccer faced their first true adversity on Saturday, but pushed through and won 2-1 over the No. 17 Cumberland Phoenix. Reigning Sun Conference Defensive Player of the Year,
Maja Henriksson scored both goals for the Seahawks in the win.
- A quick start is one of the keys to success and the Seahawks showed that in today's game.
- After forcing a corner in the 5th minute, Maja Henriksson found herself in the right spot at the right time as she blocked a clear attempt that went straight into the Phoenix net.
- Keiser would continue to apply pressure in the early moments of the game, earning five corners in the first 20 minutes of action.
- Following a foul in the 22nd minute, Henriksson stepped up and rocketed a shot into the upper right corner of the net to put KU ahead 2-0.
- The Seahawks would continue with their pressure through the end of the half, holding a 13-3 advantage in shots and 9-0 in corners.
- The Phoenix would not back down and in fact rose up in the second half, putting Keiser on the back foot for the early minutes of the second half.
- A fortunate bounce in the 55th minute saw a blocked Phoenix shot fall to the foot of Sarah Haddock who placed a shot beyond the outreached arms of the keeper and put Cumberland on the board.
- CU continued to put pressure on the Seahawks but Keiser would hold strong on the defensive end with multiple stops and saves.
- With just over 10 minutes remaining, KU would seize control of the game and even put together a few offensive attacks before the final whistle confirmed the 2-1 win for Keiser.
- The win pushes the Seahawks to their fourth 7-0 start in program history(2006, 2008, 2016).
- Another win for Head Coach Mat Dunn sees him at 199 now in his Keiser career.
- Keiser is now 55-30-9 all-time against ranked opponents, 23-7-1 at home.
- Henriksson made her presence known throughout the game scoring her first and second goals of the season for the Seahawks.
- Including Henriksson, Keiser is now up to 10 different goal scorers this season.
- A strong day in net for Grace McClellan, earning five saves on the afternoon which places her just one behind Mia Moeller for fourth all time.
- Athough the Phoenix had a strong second half, Keiser continued their streak of outshooting their opponents once again today, 22-11, 12-6 on goal
