In a game that the Seahawks dominated from start to finish, the Keiser women's basketball team (7-4) cruised past the Florida National Conquistadors, 77-54, on Saturday afternoon. The Seahawks shot a season-high 50.0 percent from the floor and made 40.9 percent of their attempts from 3-point range. Seniors Shykim Gillion and Kennedy Schlabach combined for 34 points as Keiser moved to 6-1 in non-conference action this season.

How it Happened


First Quarter

Keiser 19, Florida National 8
  • Elliana Schaefer got things started with a 3-point bucket at the 9:02 mark of the first quarter. 
  • FNU responded with a layup by Louise Pilley to make it a one-point game with 7:29 on the game clock.
  • It would be the closest that the Conquistadors would get.
  • Kennedy Schlabach hit a triple with 4:54 left in the quarter to make it an 8-3 game.
  • After Kaylee Llanos pulled FNU within two with a 3-pointer (10-8) with 4:07 remaining in the first, Keiser went on a 9-0 run to close out the quarter and take a double-digit lead.
  • Steals by Schaefer and Schlabach led to the final two buckets of the quarter as Julia Fitzwater hit KU's third triple of the quarter (1:02) and Taylor Jones sank a jumper (00:40) to give Keiser a 19-8 advantage.

Second Quarter

Keiser 35, Florida National 20
  • Shykim Gillion extended the Keiser lead to 13 with a made layup, 21-8, with 7:07 left in the first half.
  • The Conquistadors brought the Keiser lead back down to single-digits but another 3-pointer by Schlabach with 4:40 remaining in the second made it a 28-18 game.
  • Schlabach hit a jumper with 2:57 on the game clock to give the Seahawks a 31-18 edge.
  • Baskets by Janiece Thomas (1:13) and Gillion (00:04) pushed the Keiser lead to 35-20 heading into intermission. 

Third Quarter

Keiser 58, Florida National 35
  • FNU's Tyra Kirlew hit the first bucket of the second half with a made layup at the 8:56 mark (35-22).
  • Both teams exchanged baskets over the next five minutes.
  • Back-to-back 3-pointers by Schlabach and Fitzwater gave KU a 20-point advantage with 4:54 remaining in the third.
  • The Seahawks took their then-largest lead, 51-30, following a three-point play by Jones (3:53).
  • A 7-2 run to end the third gave Keiser a 23-point lead going into the final quarter.

Fourth Quarter

Keiser 77, Florida National 54
  • The Conquistadors made three straight baskets to cut the Keiser lead to 58-41 with 8:59 left to play.
  • Thomas pushed the lead back above 20 with a fastbreak layup with 7:49 on the game clock.
  • An 8-0 run with just over a minute to play in the contest gave Keiser its biggest lead of the game, 75-47.
  • FNU outscored the Seahawks, 7-2, in the final 1:02 to cut Seahawk advantage to 23 (77-54).

  • This win improves Keiser to 7-4 overall.
  • The win moved Keiser to 6-1 in non-conference action this season.
  • It marked the Seahawk's second straight win.
  • With the win, Keiser moves to 7-1 all-time versus FNU.
  • In just the third game played between the two teams in Hialeah, Keiser is now 2-1 all-time versus FNU at Bucky Dent Gym.
