No. 1 Women's Soccer Grinds Out 1-0 Quarterfinal Win Over No. 13 Aquinas

Lauren Riley scored the only goal that mattered for No. 1 women's soccer as the Seahawks defeated the eighth-seeded No. 13 Aquinas College, 1-0. Keiser will advance to play the fourth-seeded Cougars from Spring Arbor.

 

 

How it Happened
  • The Seahawks had the first opportunity of the contest in the second minute with a corner kick but would not be able to convert the chance.
  • Aquinas would turn the pressure against Keiser for the next 20 minutes firing four shots toward the Seahawks' net.
  • The Saints would continue to put multiple corners and shots toward Grace McClellan but she would be able to punch away each attempt.
  • KU would take back the control of the game in the 29th minute with Lauren Riley's chance sailing just wide.
  • The Saints would get the final shot of the half off in the 38th but McClellan would handle the chance with ease.
  • Keiser would open the second half with a burst of energy as the Seahawks were back to pressing high and creating chances.
  • Oline Sundgot nearly put a header home in the 53rd minute but the ball would go wide of the post.
  • The Seahawks would force two more saves out of the Saints' keeper in the 56th and 65th minute. 
  • After a blocked cross attempt, Maja Henriksson would send it into the box and connect with Riley on the back post who guided the ball into the net for the first goal in the 77th minute.
  • Aquinas would have the last shot in the contest but McClellan would fall onto it and give the Seahawks the opportunity to run out the final four minutes and secure the win.
Game Notes
  • With the win, the Seahawks improve to 22-0-1 on the year, and 28-12-2 in the NAIA National Championship.
  • Keiser will advance to their seventh Semifinal after improving their Quarterfinal record to 6-1-0 all-time.
  • Riley's goal was the 12th of the year for the freshman forward.
  • Henriksson's assist was the 17th of the season and the 55th of her career to move her into a tie for second all-time in program history.
  • Another win and another shutout for McClellan in net sees her move to a tie for second all-time in wins with 45.
  • The Seahawks have now won three of their last four games by a score of 1-0.
  • With the seven to five advantage in corner kicks, it was the 17th time this season the Seahawks have won the corner kicks battle.
