No. 3 Women's Soccer Advances to the NAIA National Championship, Defeating No. 7 Spring Arbor in Penalty Kicks

No. 3 Keiser University advanced to their third straight NAIA National Championship game, defeating No. 7 Spring Arbor 4-3 in penalty kicks. 

With the victory, the Seahawks will look to defend their National Title against No. 1 William Carey on Monday evening. The Crusaders knocked off KU two years ago in the championship game and also beat the Seahawks this season in West Palm Beach.

.How it Happened
  •  The lone goal of the opening half came in the 33rd minute off the foot of Maja Henriksson.
  • The scoreline remained the same at the intermission with KU holding an 8-1 edge on shots.
  • Spring Arbor equalized the game in the 57th minute on a penalty kick.
  • Neither team would score again as the semifinal moved to the first overtime period.
  • The Seahawks held a 3-2 shot advantage in the two overtime periods but the contest went to penalty kicks.
  • Matilda Ovenberger went first in PK's missing her shot but so did Spring Arbor's, Mackenzie Selvius.
  • The next three takers all made their shots including Keiser's; Kyoka Koshijma, Ronja Henriksson, and M. Henriksson.
  • After the Cougars retied the PK' at three-apiece, Josefine Troneby converted as the Seahawks led 4-3.
  • With the game on the line, Rebekah Cotton missed her shot as the Seahawks went back to the National Championship Game for a third straight year.

Game Notes
  • Keiser is trying to be the first team since former member Lee (Tenn.) to go back-to-back as national champions. The Flames claimed four-straight red banners from 2008-2011.
  • Keiser is 24-11-2 all-time in the NAIA National Tournament.
  • The Seahawks are 2-1-2 in the NAIA semifinals.
  • Keiser is now 1-1 in NAIA semifinal games that go to penalty kicks.
  • This is the second time in three seasons that these two teams met in the semis.
  • KU is 3-2-2 against Top 25 teams this season.
  • Grace McClellan made three saves on the evening.
  • M. Henriksson finished with a game-best four shots.
