Women's Basketball Uses Second-Half Surge to Take Down St. Thomas, 77-61

The Keiser Seahawks used a second-half surge, outscoring the Bobcats, 49-27, to come away with a 77-61 win over St. Thomas on Thursday night. Five Seahawks scored in double-figures on Thursday, including Kaitlyn Fertig, who led KU with 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting.

Four straight successful trips to the charity stripe by Shykim Gillion in the third gave the Seahawks their first lead of the game, 47-45, sparking an 8-2 run to close out the frame.  
 
 
 
How it Happened



First Quarter

St. Thomas 19, Keiser 9
  • The Seahawks fell behind early, missing their first nine shots. 
  • Elliana Schaefer hit the first bucket of the game for Keiser, draining a trey with 4:37 left in the quarter.
  • Schaefer hit a pair of free throws at the 3:55 mark to cut the Bobcat lead to four, 9-5.
  • STU closed out the quarter, outscoring the Seahawks, 10-4.

Second Quarter

St. Thomas 34, Keiser 28
  • A 3-pointer by Kaitlyn Fertig pulled Keiser within eight, 23-14 (with 6:24 left in the half).
  • Both teams traded buckets over the next four minutes.
  • Fertig again brought the deficit to single-digits with a 3-pointer with under a minute left in the half, 34-26.
  • Schaefer hit two free throws with seven seconds on the clock to make the score, 34-28, heading into halftime.  

Third Quarter

Keiser 52, St. Thomas 47
  • A layup by Angela Denis (9:26) and a trey by Andressa Nascimento (8:39) pulled the Seahawks within one in the early part of the third.
  • Chiara De Virgilio tied the game at, 43-43, with 3-pointer at the 3:42 mark. 
  • Shykim Gillion gave KU its first lead of the with 2:20 on the clock after converting four straight from the charity stripe. 
  • The Seahawks went on a 7-2 run to end the quarter and take a 5-point lead, 52-47.

Fourth Quarter

Keiser 77, St. Thomas 66
  • The fourth quarter saw the Seahawks extend their lead to double-digits following a layup by Schaefer with 8:33 left in the game.
  • De Virgilio made it 62-49 with a 3-point at the 7:18 mark.
  • Nascimento made it a 17-point game with a bucket from downtown with 5:16 on the game clock.
  • The Seahawks took their largest lead of the game (20) with her fourth 3-pointer of the game (4:15)

  • With the win, Keiser improves to 6-1 on the year and 2-1 in Sun Conference action.
  • With the win, KU has now won four of the last six outings versus the Bobcats.  
  • The marks the Seahawk's second straight over St. Thomas at the Student Life Center.
  • KU improves to 9-24 all-time versus St. Thomas and is now 7-8 all-time versus the Bobcats at the SLC.
  • With the 16-point win, Keiser has recorded an average margin of victory of +21.4 through the first seven games.
