The Keiser men's basketball team dropped their first overtime game of the season as they fell to Ave Maria, 88-85, in a hard fought Sun Conference battle Monday night.
Keiser 33, Ave Maria 30
- Not much separated the Sun Conference foes in the opening 2:12 as the score was knotted at five, with all five Keiser points coming from CoreVon Lott.
- Ave Maria broke the tie with a layup at the 17:11 mark, sparking a 9-2 run for the Gyrenes as they jumped in front 14-7 leading to a Keiser timeout.
- The Gyrenes stretched their run to a 12-2 mark out of the timeout before back-to-back three-pointers by Darius Bryant and Lott put an end to the stretch and cut the deficit to four, 17-13, with 11:27 left on the clock.
- Lott followed with another triple out of an Ave Maria timeout to get the Seahawks to within one, 17-16, as the junior totaled 11 points in the opening 9:10 of action.
- The teams traded baskets over the next six minutes, until Marko Radulovic took over from downtown for the Seahawks. The senior evened the contest with a wing three and followed with another from deep to give Keiser their first lead of the night, 31-28, at the 3:27 mark.
- Offense was hard to come by over the final 3:27 as the teams split baskets giving the Seahawks the 33-30 edge at the break.
Keiser 72, Ave Maria 72
- Ave Maria charged out of the gates in the second half with a 10-0 flurry to reclaim the lead, 40-33, and force a Keiser timeout at the 17:16 mark.
- Out of the timeout the Seahawks answered with a 7-2 run to draw within two, 42-40, following a Radulovic triple with 15:47 to go in the period.
- A 5-0 surge stretched the Gyrenes lead back up to seven, 47-40, before Antwan Claxton was able to halt the run briefly with a pair of free throws at the 14:31 mark.
- The Gyrenes continued to build their lead though with another spurt as the deficit grew to nine for Keiser, 51-42, as the clock showed 13:38 left.
- A Quinton Glaspie jumper on the ensuing possession for the Seahawks sparked a 15-4 run as Keiser reclaimed the lead, 57-55, at the 9:29 media timeout. Lott tied the game with a pair of free throws during the run and ultimately gave Keiser the lead with a layup off an offensive rebound.
- Both teams traded threes out of the media break before Ave Maria regained the lead, 61-60, at the 7:42 mark.
- Glaspie put Keiser back in front, 62-61, with a pair of free throws and spurred a 6-0 run as the Seahawks led 66-61 with 5:43 showing on the clock.
- The Gyrenes answered once again, this time with a 7-2 run to tie the contest at 68 with 3:40 remaining in the period.
- The final 3:40 featured three lead changes and two ties as the two squads headed to overtime tied at 72 following a missed tip-in at the buzzer by the Seahawks.
Keiser 85, Ave Maria 88
- Ave Maria scored the opening points of overtime courtesy of their 10th three-pointer of the game to take a 75-72 lead at the 4:27 mark.
- Trailing 77-74, Lott came through with a huge step-back three to even the score with 3:37 remaining in overtime.
- Following a three-pointer by both sides, Ave Maria registered back-to-back baskets to claim an 84-80 advantage with only 44 ticks left on the clock.
- Darius Bryant kept the Seahawks in it with his sixth three of the night to trim the deficit to one, 84-83 with 23 seconds left in the contest.
- Ave Maria iced the contest from the line making all four of their attempts in the closing seconds as Keiser dropped a hard fought battle on the road, 88-85.
- 2: The contest marked the second overtime game of the season for Keiser.
- 5: Claxton dished out a team-high five assists on the night.
- 8: Claxton, Harris and Glaspie each totaled eight rebounds a piece to lead the team.Â
- 13: Keiser registered 13 made threes on the night on 40.6 percent shooting.
- 27: Lott boasted a team-best 27 points, marking his seventh 20-point performance of the season.
