No. 24 Baseball Suffers First Conference Loss in Extra-Innings to Thomas

Keiser Highlights
  • The Seahawks suffered their first conference loss of the year this afternoon but still won the series, 2-1. The Night Hawks came out on top 8-7 in ten innings after Fowler hit a leadoff home run.
  • Both teams finished with 12 hits as Nate VanKan, Nick Diaz, and Jonathan Fernandez had two hits apiece for the Seahawks. VanKan had two of the three extra base hits in the contest for KU.
 
Turning Point
The Seahawks had runners in scoring position in the ninth and tenth innings but were unable to score. The Night Hawks made Keiser pay for it with a walk-off home run in the tenth.
 
How it Happened
  • VanKan started the game with a double before scoring on a one-out RBI ground out to short by Mark Gottsacker to lead 1-0.
  • Thomas stormed out of the gates in the bottom half of the inning with six runs on seven hits to jump ahead 6-1.
  • A pair of unearned runs off RBI singles from Juan De La Cruz and Fernandez brought the Seahawks to within three in the second frame.
  • The Seahawks climbed to within 6-4 in the third as Drew Reilly laced a one-out RBI single to right, scoring Diaz, who led-off the inning with a single.
  • Thomas got a run back in the fifth with two-outs and held the Seahawks in check until the eighth inning.
  • Peter Crocitto and Ezequis Encarnacion reached base before coming in to score on a pinch-hit, triple by Garrett Hall, trimming the deficit to, 7-6. Cristian Sanjurjo, also pinch hitting, followed with an RBI single, tying the game at 7-7.
  • Keiser loaded the bases in the ninth with nobody out but were unable to capitalize as the Night Hawks sat down the next three batters.
  • In the tenth, the Seahawks had runners on second and third with one-out but again were unable to capitalize. Thomas took advantage in the bottom half with a leadoff home run from Fowler, handing KU their first conference loss of the year, 8-7.
