The Seahawks women's basketball team suffered their first loss of the year as they were defeated by Mount Vernon Nazarene, 78-69, on Friday evening in Ohio.
Keiser held a one point lead as the game moved to the fourth quarter but were outscored 21-3 in the opening 6:30. The Seahawks continued to battle but were unable to get any closer than nine.
How it Happened
First Quarter: Keiser 18, MVNU 11
- The quarter opened with a pair of lead changes and ties before the Seahawks went on an 11-0 run to lead 15-4 with 1:01 to play. During the run, Nikki Saunders and Antigonie Sanabria had four points apiece, while Kelly Meade had three.
- Mount Vernon outscored Keiser 6-3 but the Seahawks remained in front, 18-10, at the end of the quarter.
Second Quarter: Keiser 34, MVNU 31
- The Cougars nailed a three-pointer to start the period but Keiser answered with a 7-0 run, matching their largest lead of the half, 25-14, with 8:03 remaining.
- MVNU cut into their deficit with a 10-2 run but still trailed the Seahawks, 27-24, at the 3:45 mark.
- Over the next two minutes, Keiser pushed their lead back out to eight, 32-24, as they tallied five straight points.
- Mount Vernon closed the half on a 7-2 run but KU remained on top at the intermission, 34-31.
Third Quarter: Keiser 55, MVNU 54
- Mount Vernon chipped away at the Seahawks lead during the opening 4:30 of the period but the Seahawks clung to a one-point lead, 39-38.
- After exchanging buckets, Midori Long scored four unanswered points, extending the advantage to 45-40 with 5:09 remaining.
- MVNU evened the game at 49-49 as Taylor Gregory hit a jumper while being fouled with 3:00 left in the frame.
- The Cougars went in front for the first time since the 8:24 mark of the opening quarter, 50-49, as Gregory split from the line.
- Sanabria quickly put Keiser back on top by two with a long range three-pointer off an assist from Emily Patton.
- MVNU tallied the next four points to lead by two but Meade converted on an old fashion three-point play as Keiser led, 55-54, with one quarter remaining.
Fourth Quarter: Keiser 69, MVNU 78
- The Cougars exploded out of the gates with a 21-3 run to take a 75-58 advantage with 3:30 left in regulation.
- Keiser wouldn't go down without a fight, scoring nine straight points to get within eight, 75-67, with 45 seconds to go. Patton contributed six of the nine points in the span.
- The Seahawks wouldn't get any closer as they suffered their first loss of the season, 78-69.
KU Highlights
- 1: This was the first meeting between these two teams. MVNU will visit West Palm Beach in December as part of the West Palm Beach Invite.
