How it Happened
Set One:
Florida Memorial claimed an early 7-2 advantage but the Seahawks answered by claiming four of the next five points to get within 8-6. The Lions held of Keiser until an assisted block by Malone and Seward knotted the set at 13-13. Following three ties, FMU used a 5-1 spurt to claim a 21-17 advantage and wouldn't look back, taking the first set, 25-19.
Set Two:
The Seahawks grabbed the first three points before stretching the margin to 7-3 capped by a VandeHei service ace. After Florida Memorial climbed to within one, 8-7, a Lions service error sparked a 9-3 spurt to extend the KU lead to 17-10. Keiser continued to build on their advantage down the stretch, winning 25-16 and evening the match at one set apiece.
Â
Set Three:
The two squads battled back and forth with 11 ties and the largest lead of the set being just three points before FMU won 25-22. The two occasions that the Lions pushed the margin to three points, the Seahawks answered by winning the next three points to retie the set. With Keiser trailing late in the set, 22-21, FMU notched three of the final four points to win the set, 25-22, and reclaim a 2-1 lead in the match.
Â
Set Four:
With their backs against the wall, the Seahawks came out on fire in the fourth set, winning 25-16 to force the decisive fifth set. Keiser raced out to a 10-4 advantage and didn't allow Florida Memorial any closer than three, 17-14. Odom then started and ended a 6-0 run to push the margin to 23-14, forcing the home team to call a timeout.
Â
Set Five:
Keiser took an early 5-2 lead but Florida Memorial came right back with three of the next four points to get within one. However, the Seahawks ran off the next three points to lead by three, but FMU roared back by winning seven of the next eight points to jump ahead 12-10, forcing KU to take a timeout. Out of the stoppage, a Salazar kill and back-to-back attack errors by FMU put Keiser back in front, 13-12 and FMU taking a timeout of their own. Odom then served an ace and the Lions would take their final timeout of the match. Malone and
Faryn Salazar ended the match with an assisted block, lifting Keiser to the 3-2 victory.
