Match Summary
The No. 4 ranked Keiser Seahawks pulled off a big upset over No. 10 ranked NCAA Division II opponent, Embry-Riddle, besting the Eagles by the final score of 5-4. The Seahawks' victory over the Eagles marks the first time in program history that Keiser has beaten the former Sun Conference foe.

Doubles
  • The upset began with Keiser claiming the No. 2 doubles as Julian Turosienski and Romai Ugarte bested Andres Donayre and Juan Ortiz Couder, 8-4.
  • The Seahawks then yielded the No. 1 doubles position to the Eagles as Nicolas Guerschanik and Clement Raymond could not hold the 4-1 advantage, falling to Carlos Becke and Deepak Vishavkarma by the final score of 9-7.
  • Keiser rebounded with a win in the No. 3 doubles spot as Shaquille Taylor and Francesco Oliva rallied from the 6-2 deficit to win 9-8(7-1), giving the Seahawks the important 2-1 advantage.

Singles
  • It seemed as if the Seahawks would run away with the match after Arthur "Boy Wonder" Bonnaud remained undefeated in dual matches, defeating Rodolfo Arreygue in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0, to give the Seahawks the 3-1 advantage.
  • Raymond, making his spring debut, picked up a critical three-set victory from the No. 2 slot, defeating Vishavkarma, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3, providing the Seahawks with the 4-1 lead.
  • The Eagles mounted their own comeback, winning from the No. 1, 3 and 5 singles positions to even the match at four apiece.
  • The Seahawks had ample opportunities to close the door on the Eagles and pull off the upset, but were unable to do so, setting up for the dramatic finish.
  • Oliva and Luke de Caires split the first two sets, 3-6, 6-3, as Oliva overcame a 3-1 deficit in the second set to force a deciding third set.
  • Oliva's comeback carried his momentum into the final set where he cruised past de Caires by the final of 6-3 to seal the 5-4 upset for the Seahawks.

Coach's Corner
"Words honestly can't describe how proud I am of the boys tonight," commented head coach Daniel Finn. "That was a tremendous effort the entire way for them to get this win. For us to come out with the energy we did and jump ahead only to have Embry-Riddle come back and tie things up speaks volumes about how well the boys competed today. Make no mistake this match was an absolute war the whole way through. Embry-Riddle is a quality team and this when will mean a lot to this group of guys.  With playing as an intense of a match as we played yesterday and have to turn around and play this one today and find a way to win, it shows the grit of this team.  Don't get me wrong we still have a long ways to go and many things to improve upon that were even showcased today but for now we're going to enjoy this win and let it soak in but when tomorrow comes will have to get back to work"

Up Next
