Turning Point
The turning point happened in the 66
th minute of the match as the Seahawks defense committed a foul inside the box to setup Southeastern with a penalty kick opportunity. The Fire converted the attempt, extending their lead to 4-2.
How It Happened
- The Seahawks capitalized on their first opportunity of the match as Filippa Millqvist curled a corner kick into the back of the net, just sixty-one seconds into the game.
- Six minutes later, Uchenna Kanu tied the game with an unassisted goal inside the box after dribbling through the defense.
- Kanu almost gave Southeastern the lead three minutes later, but a strong defensive effort from Tova Nilsson stopped the attack.
- Amanda Blixt then had an opportunity to break the deadlock in the 13th minute but her one-touch volley was denied by a diving save from the Fire goalkeeper.
- However, less than a minute later, Aisha Solorzano broke the tie with a shot from 25 yards out to the far post, putting Southeastern out in front 2-1.
- Kiera Heslam had a near equalizing goal in the 18th minute as her corner kick hit the crossbar and deflected out of play.
- On the ensuing possession for Southeastern, Kanu found herself inside the box yet again and scored off her own rebound, making it 3-1 Fire.
- Eight minutes later, Cooper Mullins found the back of the net, but her goal was called back due to an offsides call against the Seahawks.
- Only 30 seconds later, Mullins header off a free kick by Heslam was cleared off the line by the Fire defense, again keeping Keiser off the board.
- Heslam had another great opportunity for a goal in the 38th minute, but her blast to the upper corner was saved by the diving Kaitlyn Romero.
- Millqvist scored her second goal of the game from the far left side, bringing the score to 3-2 at the half.
- Emma Holmskov provided Keiser with their first scoring opportunity of the new half in the 58th minute but her shot soared just above the crossbar.
- SEU then added an insurance goal in the 66th minute on a Kanu penalty kick, extending the margin to 4-2.
- The final scoring opportunity for the Seahawks came in the 87th minute, but the shot from Blixt went just wide of the goal.
Game Notes
- The loss for Keiser snaps their 12-game winning streak and is their first loss to a Sun Conference opponent at home since the 2015 season.
- Millqvist's two goals are her sixth and seventh of the year. The sophomore now leads the Seahawks in total points with 29.
- Elsa Netz picked up four saves on the day, bringing her to 39 on the year.
Coach's Corner
Head Coach
Mat Dunn said, "Congrats to SEU and Coach Randy for their great season, as their program has been outstanding. They have only lost two games in two seasons, which were both against us. SEU had our number today and I thought the game was great for spectators from beginning to end. I felt we scored too early and a couple of lapses in concentration led to two goals for Southeastern and then our backs were against the wall. Still down 3-2 and then 4-2, we still had chances to get back into it but it just wasn't our day today. This one result doesn't define our season as we were regular season champions at 10-0 and that is something to be proud of. We will now wait until Monday and see what the tournament bracket looks like."
