The #1 seed Northwood baseball team was eliminated in a hard fought 10-8 13 inning game against #5 seed South Carolina Beaufort.
The Sand Sharks led 8-5 entering the ninth when Northwood made an exciting comeback. Gabby Mundo tripled off the right field fence to lead off the inning and scored on an RBI single to center by Nick Black. Keivan Berges then singled up the middle platting Andrew Danner getting to within 8-7. On a 2-2 count Casey Mullennix belted a double to right field scoring Chris Cronican knotting the game at 8-8. However, the Sand Sharks score two runs in the 13th winning the game 10-8.
South Carolina Beaufort scored the games first run in third but the Seahawks responded with two of their own in the bottom half. A black RBI single up the middle tied it at 1-1 and a Berges sacrifice fly to center gave the Seahawks a 2-1 advantage. However, the visitors pushed three runs across in the fourth, and one in the fifth and sixth to lead 6-2.
Mullennix connected on a solo homer to left center in the sixth making it 6-3, and a Luis Roman double down the right field line cut it to 6-4. Back to back wild pitches scored Roman making it 6-5 but USCB responded with two in eighth pushing back out to a 8-5 lead setting up the exciting finish.
Mundo led the way with four hits, while Black and Mullennix had two apiece. Weston Wuthrich picked up the loss despite throwing five strong innings at the end of the game.
The Seahawks fall to 39-12 overall on the season with the loss. Northwood will now await the NAIA Regional draw on Friday to see where they will be playing.
