#3 Baseball Wins Sun Conference Title Outright With 5-3 Victory

The #3 Northwood baseball team defeated #22 St. Thomas 5-3 in game one of a three game set on Friday evening. With the win, the Seahawks claimed the Sun Conference title outright.

The Seahawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI double to right center by Keivan Berges and an RBI single by Luis Roman. The Bobcats cut the deficit in half in the bottom half, but Northwood got the run back in the second on a walk making it 3-1.

St. Thomas platted a run in the fifth getting to within 3-2, but Berges drove a two run homer to center in the seventh extending the lead to 5-2. The Bobcats pushed a run across the ninth, but got no closer falling 5-3.

Cody Gray (8-2) went eight innings striking out 11, while only allowing five hits. Andres Caraveo picked up his third save on the year.

Jesus Fuenmayor, Joee Reyna, Carlos Contreras, and Berges all had two hits apiece.

Head Coach Jeremy Kennedy said, "Cody did a great job tonight. He is just an absolute handful for anyone. Watching him pitch is a real honor for me. We had so many big plays tonight to preserve the win. The biggest was Casey's catch in center. That was one of the best catches I've seen in a while and it was in a crucial spot. If that ball drops we likely lose the game. Andres did a great job of holding them off in the 9th. He could have broke but he hung in, stayed composed, and made pitches."

With the win, the Seahawks improve to 39-8 overall and 22-3 in Sun Conference play. Both teams meet again tomorrow in a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.
