The Northwood baseball team swept the three game series with #11 Embry-Riddle on Saturday afternoon. The Seahawks won game one 4-1 and game two 5-1, improving their win streak to ten games and two straight series sweeps.
Embry-Riddle scored first in the first game with a run in the second inning before Northwood struck with four in the fourth. Ryan Palenzuela singled up the middle scoring Keivan Berges tying it at 1-1. An errant throw home on a Brandon Crawfordfielders choice scored two runs pushing the Seahawks in front 3-1. A Gabby Mundo sacrifice fly to center pushed the final run of the game across winning it 4-1.
Steven Bruce improved to 5-0 on the year, going eight strong innings striking out four while only walking two batters. Alan Carey picked up the save in consecutive games retiring the side in the ninth inning.
In game two, the Seahawks put two on the board in the first inning for the early lead. Carlos Contrerassingled to center scoring Mundo for the 1-0 advantage. Berges followed with a double to right center platting Tyler Hittfor the 2-0 lead. The Eagle cut the deficit in half in the second, but Northwood answered with a run in the third on a Luis Romansingle to right field making it 3-1. The Seahawks pushed two more runs across in the sixth inning on a Contreras RBI single and Berges RBI double winning the game 5-1.
Andres Caraveopicked up the win pitching four innings of relief striking out five, while not allowing a hit. Berges led the way at the plate with three hits.
Head Coach Jeremy Kennedy said, "I am really proud of the way we competed all weekend. We really executed in every aspect. Pitchers did an outstanding job all weekend. That is a good team with alot of tradition, those wins don't come easy."
With the sweep, Northwood improves to 19-5 overall and 10-2 in Sun Conference play. The Seahawks return to the field on Monday when they take on #23 Tennessee Wesleyan at Embry-Riddle. The game is set for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.
