Berges Big Day Lifts #7 Baseball to Sweep of Warner

The #7 Northwood baseball team swept Warner behind the huge day of Keivan Berges on Saturday afternoon. The Seahawks took game one 11-1 in seven innings and game two 7-6.

Northwood struck first in game one with RBI singles by Carlos Contreras and Berges for the early 2-0 lead in the first. Gabby Mundo increased it to 3-0 in the second on a double to left field. The Seahawks added on in the third on a two run homer to right center by Luis Roman making it 5-0. Jesus Fuenmayor ended the scoring in the inning with a single to right field upping it to 6-0.

Warner broke through in the fifth with a run (6-1), but a second Mundo double to left field increased it to 7-1. Northwood put the game away in the seventh with four runs. Tyler Goff scored the first run on an error and a two run double by Joee Reyna to left field pushed the lead to 10-1. Andrew Danner ended the game with his single to right field winning 11-1.

Berges picked up the win on the mound throwing the complete game, striking out six while allowing one unearned run. Contrereas led the way at the plate with three hits, while Mundo, Berges, and Fuenmayor had two hits apiece.

In game two, trailing 4-3 entering the seventh inning, Northwood stormed back with three runs retaking a 6-4 lead. Contreras knotted it at 4-4 on an error by the shortstop and a two run homer to left field by Berges his second on the day made it 6-4. However, the Royals tied it at 6-6 in the ninth inning on a two run homer setting up an exciting bottom half.

Fuenmayor led the inning off with a walk and moved up to second on a passed ball. An intentional walk to Berges and second passed ball moved up both runners to second and third with two outs. Warner opted to intentionally walk Ryan Palenzuela to face Casey Mullennix with the bases loaded and two down. The plan however did not work as Northwood won the game on the walk off walk.

Warner scored three runs in the second and one in the third for a 4-0 lead. A sacrifice fly to left field by Goff in the fourth got Northwood on the board at 4-1. A two run homer to left field by Berges cut it to 4-3 setting up the exciting the ending.

Mundo, Mullennix, Reyna, and Berges led the way at the plate with two hits apiece. Andres Caraveo picked up the win moving to 5-0 with his two strikeouts in the ninth inning.

Head Coach Jeremy Kennedy on the day, "Today was Keivan Berges's day. He was very good on the mound in game one and really had a great weekend with the bat. Overall we played well on the weekend. I was disappointed with some of our mental mistakes today but hopefully we can learn from those. We are on the right track and just need to continue to learn and improve at what we do."

With the sweep, Northwood improves to 28-7 overall and 16-2 in Sun Conference play. The Seahawks return to the field on Wednesday when they travel to NCAA Division 2 Palm Beach Atlantic. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
