#7 Baseball Wins Game One 10-1 Over #18 USCB

The #7 Northwood baseball team defeated #18 USC Beaufort 10-1 in game one of a three game series on Friday afternoon.  The Seahawks improve to 20-6 overall and 11-2 in Sun Conference play.

Northwood jumped out to a 1-0 in lead in the first on a fielding error. The Seahawks extended their lead in the fourth when Casey Mullennix drilled a 3-1 pitch over the left field fence pushing the lead to 2-0. A perfectly executed squeeze bunt by Luis Roman in the sixth made it 3-0.

South Carolina Beaufort got their first run of the game in the seventh on a home run to left cutting it to 3-1. However, a grand slam by Roman in the bottom half gave Northwood a 7-1 advantage. Andrew Danner then singled through the left side pushing the margin to 8-1 and a Carlos Contreras double to left center for the 10-1 victory.

Cody Gray picked up the win (4-2) going eight innings striking out seven while only allowing one run. Weston Wuthrich threw a scoreless ninth inning in relief.

The Seahawks outhit their opponents 13-4, with Roman leading the way with five runs batted in. Five different Northwood hitters recorded two hits.

"That was a good win for us, said Head Coach Jeremy Kennedy. We got back to our good approaches and played our baseball again after a couple games of poor execution and focus. Cody was what Cody is...Pitched like an ace. We have our work cut out for us tomorrow. They competed until the final out and I expect they will do that again."

These same two teams meet tomorrow in a doubleheader. The games are set for 12:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
