Three Straight Sweeps for #7 Northwood with Wins Over USCB

The #7 Seahawks baseball team swept #18 USC Beaufort in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Northwood shutout their opponents 8-0 in game one, and a Luis Roman walkoff in the tenth taking game two 8-7.

Northwood struck first with two runs in the third inning for an early 2-0 advantage. Gabby Mundo platted the first on an RBI double to left field making it 1-0. A sacrifice fly by Keivan Berges to center field pushed the lead to 2-0. Carlos Contreras picked up an RBI on a groundout to second upping the advantage to 3-0 in the fifth.

Brandon Crawford singled to center pushing Mundo across in the sixth making it 4-0. A pair of RBI singles to center by Contreras and Roman extended the lead to 6-0 in the seventh. Berges scored the final two runs of the game in eighth on an RBI single to center winning 8-0.

Steven Bruce moved to 6-0 on the year throwing seven innings, striking out six batters while not allowing a walk. Thomas Jordan and Jonathan Clark threw shutout innings in relief. Nothwood had 14 hits with Ryan Palenzuela and Mundo having three apiece.

In game two, USCB led 7-6 in the tenth inning when Northwood plated two runs to win the game 8-7. Nick Black and Mundo both reached base on errors and an intentional walk to Contreras loaded the bases with one out. Berges then drilled an RBI single tying the game and Roman singled to right field to win the game.

Contreras doubled to left field scoring the game's first run taking a 1-0 lead. However, the Sand Sharks knotted the game at 1-1 in the second, and took their first lead of the series with two runs in the third and fifth innings to lead 5-1.

The Seahawks cut into the deficit in the sixthwith three runs. A Brandon Crawford RBI walk got it going and a two run RBI single through the left side by Tyler Goff made it 5-4. Northwood tied the game at 5-5 in the seventh on an RBI groundout to the pitcher by Roman and a Casey Mullennix sacrifice fly to center regained a 6-5 advantage.  However, USCB scored a run in the eighth tying the game at 6-6 but Northwood came out on top in ten innings.

Andres Caraveo picked up the win pitching 5.2 innings of relief striking out ten batters. Berges led the way at the plate with three hits.

With their third consecutive sweep, Northwood improves to 22-7 overall and 13-2 in Sun Conference play. The Seahawks return to the field tomorrow for a non-conference matchup with Rio Grande. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
