The Seahawks baseball team swept a double header against Ave Maria on Saturday afternoon. Northwood shutout their opponents 11-0 in game one and then won a walk off in the bottom of the ninth 5-4.
Northwood struck first in game one when Ryan Palenzuela singled scoring Jesus Fuenmayor making it 1-0 after one inning. The Seahawks extended their lead in the third when Palenzuela picked up his second RBI on the day with a sacrifice fly to center field again scoring Fuenmayor for the 2-0 advantage.
Keivan Berges singled leading off the fourth and Brandon Crawford followed with a two run home run to center field pushing the margin to 4-0.
The Seahawks put the game away in the sixth inning platting seven runs. Crawford and Joee Reyna both walked and Casey Mullennix singled to load up the bases. Gabby Mundo was then hit by a pitch extending it to 5-0. With two outs, Carlos Contreras singled up the middle pushing two runs across making it 7-0. Palenzuela then singled making it 8-0 and Berges cleared the bases with a three run homer winning the game 11-0.
Steven Bruce picked up his second win on the year going six innings striking out six while only allowing four hits. Contreras, Berges, and Palenzuela led the way with two hits apiece.
In game two, Ave Maria took an early 1-0 lead in the first before extending it to 2-0 after three innings of play. The Seahawks came back scoring three runs in the fifth taking a 3-1 lead.
Reyna led the inning off with a single before advancing to second on a passed ball. Damian Boyum walked and Mundo was hit by a pitch loading up the bases. Luis Roman singled scoring a run and a Contreras walk tied the game at 2-2. An Ave Maria wild pitch plated the final run of the inning giving the home team a 3-2 advantage.
The Gyrenes answered back with a run in the sixth knotting it at 3-3 and regained a 4-3 lead in the eigth inning. Â
In the bottom of ninth, with two outs, Mundo singled to center field and then stole second. Fuenmayor followed with a walk and Contreras singled to left field on an 0-2 count tying it at 4-4. Palenzuela ended the game with a walk off single winning 5-4 and taking the series 2-1.
Alan Carey picked up the win going 6.1 innings of relief striking out eight batters.
Northwood improves to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in Sun Conference play. The Seahawks return to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon when they welcome Florida Memorial in non-conference action. Both these games will be seven innings and begin at 1:00 p.m.
