The Seahawks men's basketball team snapped their skid on Saturday afternoon defeating Webber International 66-64. Northwood won the game with eleven seconds left when Ian Umpierre layed the ball in.
Webber took an early 9-2 before stretching it out to 11-6, when a pair of free throws by Fred Mattison started a 10-3 run capped by five straight points by Kevin McDuffie taking a 16-14 lead with 8:29 left in the half. The Warriors tied the game at 16-16 when a Marcus Hardy jumper sparked a 8-2 run including six points by Mattison giving Northwood their largest lead of the half of 24-18 with 5:37 showing. The Seahawks went on to take a 30-28 lead into the break.
The Warriors started the new half on a 10-3 run regaining a 38-33 margin with 15:04 left in regulation. Umpierre answered scoring four straight points and a Hardy jumper concluded a 6-0 run retaking a 39-38 lead with 13:44 showing. Again the home team responded taking a 45-39 lead but the Seahawks came right back with a 13-6 run gaining a 52-51 lead with 6:49. However, Webber had a run of their own using a 8-2 spark getting back a 59-54 advantage but five straight Northwood points tied it at 59-59 with 3:54.
Andrija Sarenac then nailed a three taking a 62-59 lead but again the Warriors tied the game at 64-64 with 46 seconds left, allowing Umpierre to hit the game winner with 11 seconds left. A three pointer at the buzzer was no good.
Umpierre led the three double-doubles with 17 points, ten assists, Mattison 16 points, 17 rebounds (10 offensives), and Hardy with ten points and 15 rebounds off the bench. With the win, Northwood improves to 15-11 overall and 7-8 in conference.
The Seahawks return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Warner for a conference matchup. The game is set for 7:15 p.m.
