The Northwood men's basketball team was defeated by St. Thomas 67-64 in a seesaw battle on Thursday evening. The Seahawks fall to 14-11 overall and 6-8 in Sun Conference play.
St. Thomas scored the first bucket before Northwood came storming back scoring the next ten points taking a 10-2 lead with 16:24 showing. However, the Bobcats battled back tying the game at 14-14 with 11:55 remaining in the half. Over the final nine minutes, both teams exchanged four lead changes with neither taking a larger margin then three, with the score going into the break tied at 28-28.
The seesaw battle continued coming out of the break with five lead changes with neither team taking a larger lead than two when Chris Solomon scored two straight times making it 42-38 at 12:46. St. Thomas responded by retaking a 51-47 advantage and not allowing the Seahawks to get close until the final minute of play. Northwood got to within 65-64 on a Chris Solomon three with five seconds left, but the Bobcats converted clutch free throws holding on for the 67-64 win.
Three Northwood players reached double digits led by Solomon with 19 points, and Ian Umpierre with 16 and four assists. Fred Mattison also had 13 points and a game high 13 rebounds.
The Seahawks return to action on the road on Saturday when they travel to Webber International. The tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
