The Seahawks men's basketball team lost to #2 Embry-Riddle on Tuesday evening by a 72-65 final. Northwood is now 14-10 overall and 6-7 in Sun Conference play.
In the first half, with the score tied 9-9, a Julian Smith jumper started a 7-0 run ended by a Danny Nieman three ball making it 16-9 with 11:56 to go in regulation. The Eagles answered right back with a 9-1 run of their own retaking an 18-17 advantage with 7:59 showing. Over the next three minutes both teams exchanged lead changes before Embry-Riddle pushed out to a 28-24 lead with 4:48 to go.
Chris Solomon hit a jumper and Kevin McDuffie split at the free throw line cutting the deficit to 28-27 with 2:59. However, the visitors closed out the half strong taking a 34-27 lead into the locker room.
Northwood kept trying to cut into the lead in the second half, but the Eagles always had an answer taking their largest lead of the game at 51-39 with 12:44 left in regulation. A Solomon jumper started an 8-3 run getting to within 54-47 at the 10:03 mark. Again Embry-Riddle responded going up 71-56 when the Seahawks closed out the game on a 9-1 run but came up short 72-65.
Solomon led three players in double digits with 18 points, while Fred Mattison had 12 off the bench and Julian Smith with ten. Andrija Sarenac and Nieman both had five assists, and Mattison had 11 rebounds.
Northwood will look to snap their skid on Thursday evening when they welcome St. Thomas. The game is set for 7:00 p.m.
