The Seahawks women's basketball team kicked off Sun Conference play with a 62-61 setback against St. Thomas on Saturday afternoon. Keiser moves to 3-4 overall on the year and 0-1 in conference play.
What Happened Keiser jumped out to a 10-1 lead behind six points by
Dominique Winbush, and did not allow a Bobcats basket until the 4:20 mark. St. Thomas regrouped using a 15-0 run over the next eight minutes to lead 16-10 with 7:36 left in the second.
A Winbush layup sparked an 8-1 run capped by a
Courtney Murphy three pointer, putting the Seahawks back in front 18-17 with 5:53 showing. A seesaw battled endured down the stretch with six lead changes of one point before a Murphy basket with seven seconds left put Keiser up 26-23 at the half.
St. Thomas knotted the game at 28-28 at the 6:29 mark of the third, when a Winbush layup started and ended a 6-0 run retaking a 34-28 lead with 4:42 to go. The Bobcats answered going in front 44-41 heading into the final quarter.
Keiser started on a 7-0 run capped by a Murphy layup retaking a 47-44 advantage with 8:35 showing in the fourth. St. Thomas came back to take a 50-49 lead, but a Murphy three pointer sparked a 7-2 spurt capped by a pair of  free throws by
Desirai Smith regaining a 56-52 advantage with 2:32 to go.
As the game went on St. Thomas led 62-60 when Winbush was fouled with .7 seconds left on the clock and went to the free throw line. After missing the first, she made the second and the Bobcats prevailed with the 62-61 win.
