The Keiser University men's basketball team opened Sun Conference play with a 66-61 road win against Ave Maria on Thursday evening. The Seahawks remained perfect moving to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in Sun Conference play.
What Happened Ave Maria jumped out to a 12-6 lead when a
Tyrus Weaver jumper started an 18-2 run capped off by a pair of
Stanley Whittaker free throws, giving Keiser a 22-14 lead at the 7:24 mark. The Gyrenes got to within 23-22 but the Seahawks closed out the half on a 8-0 run upping their advantage to 31-22.
The Gyrenes continued chipping away in the new half, tying the contest at 40-40 with 9:43 remaining. However, a Weaver basket started a 7-0 run capped off by a
Deion McClenton layup, pushing back out to a 47-40 advantage with 7:26 to play.
Keiser then took their largest lead of the game of 60-49 at the 3:29 mark, but Ave Maria outscored the Seahawks 12-4 climbing to within 64-61 with 33 seconds left in the game. The Keiser defense then forced a turnover and a free throw by
Kevin McDuffie and
Brice Jenkins sealed the 66-61 win.
