The Keiser University volleyball team came from behind to defeat Ave Maria 3-1 on Wednesday evening in Sun Conference play. The Gyrenes won the first set, before the Seahawks regrouped and won the next three.
Set OneThe Seahawks jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but Ave Maria responded winning the next four points retaking a 5-4 advantage. After Keiser tied it at 5-5, the Gyrenes controlled the remainder of the set pulling away for the 25-14 win.
Set TwoAve Maria led from the start by as many as five until the Seahawks cut the deficit to 16-13. An attack error started a 9-0 run highlighted by three
Nikki McKown service aces putting Keiser ahead 22-16. The Gyrenes closed to within 22-19 but the Seahawks went on to win 25-20.
Set ThreeThe Gyrenes led 6-5 when a
Kelsie Kopicki kill started an 11-1 run highlighted by four
Megan Minke kills going in front 16-7. Ave Maria got to within 19-13, but Keiser held them off going on to win 25-15.
Set FourNicole Papineau served the first four points putting Keiser ahead 4-0. With the score 10-7 Seahawks, two straight McKown kills started a 5-0 run stretching the advantage to 15-7. Ave Maria got as close as two at 20-18, but the Seahawks held on winning 25-20.
Offense/DefenseMinke led the way with 14 kills and six blocks, while McKown had ten kills and five service aces. Papineau passed for a match high 34 assists.
Up NextKeiser improved to 17-7 overall and 3-2 in Sun Conference play with the victory. The Seahawks faceoff with Johnson University tomorrow night at home starting at 7:00 p.m.
