The Northwood baseball team opened the season on Saturday dropping a pair of games in Faulkner, Alabama. In game one they fell to LSU-Alexandria 7-5, then dropped a 4-2 contest to #5 Faulkner.
In the opening game, the Generals struck first with a run in the second before the Seahawks took their first lead of the year with two runs in the third. Jesus Fuenmayor singled to start the inning before scoring on a two run homer by Luis Roman making it 2-1. LSU tied it up in the third but again Northwood struck with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Brandon Crawford homered to lead off the inning, before Fuenmayor singled in Casey Mullenix regaining the 4-3 lead. However, the Generals struck with five runs in the seventh making it 7-4. Mullenix connected on a homerun bringing the margin to 7-5 but Northwood got no closer falling in the game.
Northwood outhit their opponents 10-4. Fuenmayor, Mullenix and Nick Black led the way with two hits apiece. Alan Carey started on the mound going six innings striking out five.
During the night cap against #5 Faulkner, the Eagles took an early 1-0 lead after the first and pushed it to 2-0 after six innings. Northwood cut the deficit in half in the eighth when Carlos Contreras hit an rbi groundout plating Roman making it 2-1. However, Faulkner took a run back in the bottom half pushing it to 3-1 entering the final inning.
In the ninth, Crawford singled to start the inning, and then moved to second on a groundout and third on a wild pitch. Fuenmayor walked and Mullenix reached on an error pushing Crawford across for the final run of the game falling 4-2.
Roman led the way in the game with three hits, and Contreras had two hits.
"We looked like it was the first weekend, said Head Coach Jeremy Kennedy." "We competed but made way to many mistakes to win today." "We are learning each other and we will get better." "Cody Gray threw really well today and we had some bright spots but just made too many mistakes to beat a good team."
The Seahawks conclude their trip in Alabama tomorrow when they rematch with #5 Faulkner. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
