The Northwood men's basketball team rallied to defeat Ave Maria 52-40 on Tuesday evening in Sun Conference play. The Seahawks improve to 11-5 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
Ave Marie took an early 7-2 lead before the Seahawks battled back taking their first lead of the game at 8-7 with 14:43 showing. After a Gyrenes bucket, a Fred Mattison layup sparked a 12-0 run capped off by a pair of Julian Smith free throws for a 20-7 advantage with 8:04 to go in the half. The Seahawks built to their largest lead of the game at 27-15 and went on for a 27-19 halftime lead.
The Gyrenes came out of the break taking a 34-31 lead midway through the final period. After two lead changes, the Seahawks used a 9-0 run stretching their lead to 44-36 with 4:42 remaining. Northwood held on down the stretch, coming away with the 52-40 victory.
The Seahawks outrebounded their opponents 33-28 while grabbing 11 offensive boards. The defense forced ten turnovers while having six steals and two blocks.
Marcus Hardy led the way with 11 points, while Chris Solomon chipped in ten. Chris Lee had nine big points off the bench and four rebounds. Ian Umpierre had a game high six rebounds and five assists.
Northwood returns to action on Thursday when they travel to Thomas. The game is set for a 7:30 pm tipoff.
