WEST PALM BEACH, Fl.---The Seahawks men's basketball team beat Warner 58-54 behind an all-around performance by Ian Umpierre. Northwood moves to 10-5 overall and 3-2 in Sun Conference play after the victory.
The Seahawks jumped out to a 7-2 lead before extending it to 12-4 with 13:19 left in the half. Warner trimmed the margin to 18-13, but a three pointer by Andrija Sarenac sparked a 7-2 run giving Northwood their largest lead of the half at 25-15 with 2:13 remaining. The Seahawks went on to take a 29-21 advantage into the intermission.
Northwood started the second half strong, using an 11-3 run taking their largest lead of the game at 42-28 with 13:13 to go. Warner answered right back with a 17-7 run, spanning over eight minutes getting to within 49-45 with 5:17 showing. Over the next three minutes, the Royals got to within 53-50 but clutch free throws by Umpierre and Marcus Hardy put the game away by a final of 58-54.
The Seahawks outrebounded their opponents 39-29 and going 15-21 from the free throw line. Umpierre led the way with a team high 16 points, game high 12 rebounds, and four assists. Hardy had 14 points while Danny Nieman had seven points and team high five helpers. Fred Mattison chipped nine rebounds and one block.
Northwood returns to action on Tuesday when they welcome Ave Maria. The game is set for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff.
